2-Alarm Lanham Apartment Fire Displaces Nearly 50 Residents - Greenbelt Road

A 2-alarm Lanham apartment building fire this morning caused $50,000 in damage and displaced nearly 50 residents.

Just after 7:30 am, Tuesday, April 1, firefighter/medics were alerted to a fire in an apartment building in the 10000 block of Greenbelt Road.  Firefighters arrived at the 3-story in the front, 4-story in the rear garden-style apartment building with smoke coming from the building.

A fire was located on a lower level floor with the fire extending to the upper floors and roof area by way of pipe chases located in the buildings interior walls.  Realizing this type of fire is work extensive a Second Alarm was sounded bringing additional resources and staffing to the scene.  There were 60 firefighter/medics, incident commanders and support personnel on the scene.

The fire was knocked down within 30 minutes of arrival and overhaul of the interior started.

Fire Investigators believe the fire started inside of a utility closet and the cause remains under investigation. Fire loss is estimated at $50,000.  15 apartment units will be uninhabitable until repairs can be mad,  30 adults and 15 children will suffer displacement.  They are being assisted through the County Citizen Services Unit, American Red Cross and apartment complex management.
