Knights of Columbus Honors Three Members of the Fire/EMS Department

The Knights of Columbus, Sacred Heart Council #2577 recently honored three members of the Prince George’s County Fire/Emergency Medical Services Department. The Annual Public Safety Officer Recognition ceremony was held at the Knight of Columbus in Bowie on Saturday, January 28, 2012. The Fire/EMS Department was honored to have three members awarded by the Knights of Columbus with Firefighter of the Year and Paramedic of the Year distinctions.

Fire Fighter Michael Conway and Bowie Volunteer Fire Fighter Travis Murdoch were recognized as the Knights of Columbus Fire Fighters of the Year. The pair was recognized for their efforts where they rescued four occupants trapped on the second floor of their burning home in Bowie.

Fire Fighter/Medic Edward Scott was bestowed the Knights of Columbus Paramedic of the Year distinction for his role in helping to save the life of a 5-year-old Clinton girl that had stopped breathing.

Prince George’s County Fire/EMS Chief Marc Bashoor and Bowie Volunteer Chief Lee Havens were on hand to help honor the awardees.

Glenn Dale House Fire - One Firefighter Injured

Just before 2:30 am, Sunday, January 29, 2012, Firefighters fought a house fire that caused $300,000 in estimated fire loss. The fire at the 2-story single family home was caused accidentally and attributed to an electrical source. Fire/EMS arrived in the 8000 block of Wingate Drive in Glenn Dale and found a well-advanced fire on both floors of the structure. A Task Force was sounded bringing additional firefighters and resources to the scene to help battle the blaze. It required about 30 minutes to knock down the majority of the fire and another 45 minutes to extinguish all the hot spots.

The County Citizen Services Unit was providing assistance to the occupants that will suffer long-term displacement.

A firefighter sustained a leg injury while she was battling the fire and was transported in “good” condition to a local hospital. No civilian injuries reported.

Greenbelt Apartment Fire Quickly Extinguished

A quick arrival and fast actions by first arriving firefighters to extinguish a fire limited the amount of damage to an apartment building. On Saturday, January 28, 2012, at about 4:30 pm, firefighters were alerted to an apartment on fire at 8423 Greenbelt Road in Greenbelt. Fire/EMS units had just cleared another fire incident in Beltsville resulting in some fire units being closer to the reported Greenbelt fire. One of those closer than normal was from Branchville Fire/EMS Company 811 (North College Park). They were one of the first that arrived quickly to find heavy fire coming from the top floor of the 3-story garden style apartment building. Firefighters initiated an aggressive interior attack on the fire by stretching hose lines to the top floor and extinguishing the fire. Searches for civilian occupants still inside were negative and the fire was extinguished and contained to the apartment of origin. In addition to Branchville, Fire/EMS units from West Lanham Hills, Berwyn Heights, Greenbelt, Glen Dale, College Park and Bowie worked to extinguish the fire. There were 35 firefighters working at the scene. The bulk of the fire was knocked down with 7 minutes of arrival.

No civilian or firefighter injuries were reported. Fire loss is estimated at $35,000. The cause of the fire appears to be accidental and started when combustible products came in contact with burning incense. Although fire damage was limited to just the one apartment, six family units will be displaced because gas and electric utilities were shut off to the building. Those displaced include 8 adults and 7 children. The County Citizen Services Unit is working with apartment complex management to restore as many units as possible to limit the amount of time the families will be displaced.

Felony Arrest for Arson in Riverdale Fire

A Bladensburg man, a former Riverdale volunteer firefighter, was arrested today and is being charged with First Degree Arson to a dwelling in Riverdale. Gerard McBurnie Dixon Jr. is charged with maliciously setting a fire to a dwelling at 4504 Kennedy Street in Riverdale on June 29, 2008. On that date, firefighters from the Riverdale Fire/EMS Station and other nearby stations were alerted to a house on fire at 3:25 am and arrived to find heavy fire showing. A firefighter sustained minor burn injuries while battling the fire.

Gerard McBurnie Dixon, Jr., DOB of 9/21/88, was arrested out-of-state by law enforcement officials and is awaiting extradition back to Prince George’s County.

Prince George’s County Fire Investigators were assisted by Special Agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the County Police Department in the investigation which led to the arrest. The investigation remains open and additional arrests are possible.

First Degree Arson is a Felony and if convicted, Dixon could face up to 30 years imprisonment or a fine not to exceed $50,000 or both.

Q&A and Awards Abound in Whirlwind Fire/EMS Station Visits

Prince George's County Fire/EMS Chief Marc S. Bashoor spent a large portion of his time on Monday and Tuesday visiting Fire/EMS Stations greeting personnel and presenting awards. In addition to greeting career, civilian and volunteer personnel he presented Emergency Services Awards, Fire Storm Awards and engaged the personnel in an open question and answer session. During these two days Bashoor visited 4 Battalions, 7 Fire/EMS Stations, greeted personnel from 16 Fire/EMS Stations that include just over 100 career, civilian and volunteer personnel. He awarded 12 Emergency Services Awards and 8 Fire Storm Awards. Bashoor found the time to attend a Public Safety Breakfast at the Laurel Fire/EMS Station #810 on Tuesday morning.

Fire Storm Awards are plaques which commemorate what is believed to be the busiest day in the Prince George's County Fire/EMS Departments history. On February 19, 2011, high winds and dry conditions sparked seven major incidents that sent all 45 Fire/EMS Stations into action and required mutual aid assistance from jurisdiction across the State of Maryland, Virginia and the District of Columbia. Every Fire/EMS Station will receive a plaque to be prominently displayed in the station to commemorate the date.

Fire Chief Bashoor also presented numerous Emergency Services Awards to deserving career and volunteer personnel. These Awards include:

Emergency Service Awards - Multiple Firefighters - Career and Volunteer

Prince George's County Fire/EMS Chief Marc S. Bashoor presented several Emergency Services Awards to deserving, career and volunteer, members of the Department for their actions on a house fire in Lewisdale.

On Sunday, November 27, 2011, these personnel were crew members onboard fire apparatus from several companies which responded to a house fire at 2411 Griffen Street in the Chillum-Adelphi area. On arrival, crews encountered a working fire with three victims possibly trapped inside the residence. Some personnel entered the premise ahead of the hose line and searched in high heat conditions with low visibility while one took command of the incident and than proceeded to transition his abilities from incident commander to firefighter to paramedic throughout the course of the incident. Firefighters located three unconscious victims in different areas of the house and with the assistance of other crew members, removed the victims to the exterior of the house to awaiting EMS units.

Despite the outstanding efforts of all personnel on the scene, sadly, all three victims succumbed to their injuries after arriving at the hospital.

Fire Chief Bashoor was able to personally greet and present Emergency Services Awards to personnel from Chillum, Hyattsville and College Park on Tuesday, January 24. In making the award presentations he stated, "For your performance on the scene of the aforementioned incident, you are hereby presented a Fire/EMS Department Emergency Service Award. Congratulations and thank you for a job well done! Your actions represent the excellent service our Department strives to provide to the citizens of Prince George’s County."

On Tuesday, January 24, 2012, Prince George's County Fire/EMS Chief Marc S. Bashoor presented an Emergency Services Award to Branchville Volunteer Fire Fighter John "Derek" Daves. In making the presentation Bashoor stated, "In making awards presentations, it's not always about the end result, which in this incident was tragic, but the actions of the individual or group that made the effort and did the best that they could do under the circumstances."

In a ceremony at the Branchville Volunteer Fire Department in College Park Chief Bashoor presented the Emergency Services Award which was accompanied by a letter that read;

On the evening Friday, November 4, 2011, while on your way home after working Bingo at the Branchville Volunteer Fire Company and Rescue Squad, Inc., you witnessed a horrific three-vehicle crash on eastbound Route 50. There were a total of six passengers involved in the accident, four adults and two children. The two children were trapped in a burning vehicle that had burst into flames after being struck by another vehicle. You notified 911 of the incident, and without the protection of fire fighting gear or protective equipment, you immediately advanced to the burning vehicle. Hearing the screams of the bystanders alerting you of the trapped children and in an effort to access them, you aggressively attempted to open doors or break out the windows. However, the intensity of the fire, combined with thick black smoke and extreme heat, forced you to retreat without being able to make the rescue.

You painfully described seeing the two children inside the burning car as a vision that will be indelibly etched in your mind. It was later determined that the damage to the vehicle was so severe that access would only have been possible with the heavy-duty hydraulic equipment that is typically used by firefighters.

You acted without hesitation or concern for your personal safety, while attempting to save the lives of the two young victims. As a result of your actions, you sustained some minor burn injuries to your hand and exposure to the intense heat and thick smoke.

Chief Bashoor presented the award saying, "For your performance on the scene of the aforementioned incident, you are hereby presented a Fire/EMS Department Emergency Service Award.

Congratulations again, and thank you for an outstanding job. Your actions represent the excellent service our Department strives to provide to the citizens of Prince George’s County."

On Tuesday, January 24, 2012, Prince George's County Fire Chief Marc S. Bashoor presented an Emergency Services Award to Fire Fighter Michael Shipp. The award presentation was made at a brief ceremony at the District Heights Community Fire/EMS Station.

A letter accompanying the award stated; On Friday, August 12, 2011, you were a member of the crew onboard the ambulance from Morningside Fire/Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Station 827, which was transporting a patient to Prince George’s Hospital Center. The unit was near the intersection of Forestville Road and northbound Route 95, when you noticed a cloud of dark smoke and what appeared to be flames underneath a Hummer SUV. You promptly contacted Public Safety Communications, advising them of the matter and requesting additional resources. The SUV’s driver was engaged in conversation on her cell phone, making it difficult to alert her to the situation. Upon finally getting her attention, the woman remained on the phone and even accelerated before eventually pulling onto the right shoulder. She did not readily believe the SUV was on fire and had to be physically removed from the vehicle. After realizing you were telling the truth, she proceeded to the ambulance, where the crew kept her out of harm’s way. Meanwhile, you made every effort to put out the flames with a fire extinguisher. Your quick thinking and immediate action are directly responsible for changing the outcome of what potentially could have been a tragedy.

In making the award presentation, Fire Chief Bashoor stated, "For your performance on the scene of the aforementioned incident, you are hereby presented a Fire/EMS Department Emergency Service Award.

The High School Fire/EMS Department Cadet Program

Prince George's County Public Schools (PGCPS) and the Prince George's County Fire and Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Department will begin training the next generation of firefighters and emergency medical personnel in the fall.

The High School Fire/EMS Department Cadet Program was jointly announced at a press conference on Friday, January 20, 2012, at the Fire/EMS Training Academy in Cheltenham. County Executive Rushern L. Baker, III, and Deputy Chief Administrative Officer for Public Safety Barry Stanton were on hand for the event. Prince George’s County Fire Chief Marc S. Bashoor, state, “One of the things we need to do better, and we recognize this, is to recruit more of our youth. We need to get into the schools and get them interested in service and that’s what this program is going to do is to get us out there and give youth a fighting chance that they may not have otherwise had.”

The High School Fire/EMS Cadet Program commences with the 2012-2013 school year and will recruit up to twenty-four 11th graders at Charles Flowers High School in Springdale. It is expected that upon entering 12^th grade, those students will continue into the second year of the program. Subsequently, an additional twenty-four 11^th graders will enter the program, making a total of forty-eight participants.

This two-year program will allow students to take fire and emergency medical services classes, while providing 17 college credits to those who successfully complete the curriculum. Additionally, students will graduate from the program with all necessary training to be nationally certified as firefighters and Emergency Medical Technicians.

“We are equipping our students with the necessary tools to succeed, while helping the county to meet future public safety workforce needs,” said Dr. William R. Hite Jr., Superintendent of Schools.

“This is not only about helping in public service, it’s helping our education system making our children career and college ready.” Sated County Executive Baker, he concluded by saying, “It’s an exciting day for Prince George’s County.”

Charles Flowers High School was selected partly because of its close proximity to the Department’s newest facility, St. Josephs Fire/EMS Station #806. The station, which is adjacent the school, has both a training tower and classroom. Students can walk the 200 or so yards to the station where they will receive instruction in fire and emergency medical services.

On Friday, PGCPS and Prince George’s County officials signed a Memorandum of Understanding for the cadet program. In celebration of this joint venture and to “seal the deal” Dr. Hite, County Executive Baker, Fire Chief Bashoor, and Deputy Fire Chief Ben Barksdale then participated in a live fire evolution at the Fire/EMS Academy’s burn building. The press conference was attended by several members of the Prince George's County Volunteer Fire and Rescue Association and members of the Fire Chief's Community Advisory Council.

Identity of Fire Fatality from Bladensburg on January 18th

At around 11:00 am, Wednesday, January 18, firefighters in the Bladensburg area discovered an adult male deceased from thermal burn injuries. He was found in his apartment on the 6th floor at 5802 Annapolis Road where firefighters had been dispatched to investigate smoke in the hallway.

Fire Investigators believe that the man accidentally ignited his clothing while cooking. The male sustained critical burn injuries and was pronounced deceased on the scene.

Fire Investigators found evidence of a relatively small fire near the area of the stove, however, damage was minimal. The cause of the fire is accidental and attributed to cooking igniting the deceased clothing.

The identity of the deceased man has been confirmed by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner as Jerry Holloway, date of birth: 9/7/1960. He was a resident of the apartment of origin, #601.

This is the first fire fatality in Prince George's County in 2012.

Firefighters Awarded for Removing Occupants from Burning Home

Prince George’s County Fire Chief Marc S. Bashoor presented two deserving members of the Fire/EMS Department with awards recognizing them for their efforts in rescuing four people trapped in their burning home.

On the morning of November 25, 2011, at 0406 hours, Bowie Fire/EMS Station #839 was dispatched to 14100 block of Pleasant View Drive for the report of a house on fire with people trapped. Fire Fighter Michael Conway was riding the “bar” position and Bowie Volunteer Fire Fighter Travis Murdoch was the officer-in-charge on Engine 839B. Upon entering the two-story, single-family dwelling, crews encountered heavy “blacked out” smoke conditions and intense heat in the first floor hallway. A fire was located on the first floor in the living room area and crews advanced a hose line to extinguish the fire. As crews were working to contain the fire, Conway and Murdoch found the steps and ascended to the smoke and heat filled second floor, where Conway proceeded to the right and Murdoch taking the rooms on the left. Without the protection of a hose line, the pair began a search of the second floor bedrooms for the two adults and three children reported to be trapped in the home. Conway entered a room and located four female victims. He led them to an exterior balcony, where Murdoch and fellow crew members assisted with removing three of the victims from the balcony and onto the ladder. The three 12 year-old female patients were turned over to the care of awaiting paramedics, who assessed them and transported them to the hospital. For mobility reasons, the fourth victim, an adult female, was unable to exit via the ladder. A decision was made to remove her via the interior stairwell. Fire Fighter Conway removed his SCBA face piece and placed it on the victim, allowing her to breath fresh air as the exited through the thick smoke, and with the assistance of an officer on the scene, she was removed to safety.

The three 12 year-old females were treated and released from the hospital later that day; however, the adult female was hospitalized for several days before being released.

Fire Chief Bashoor presented the pair with Emergency Services Award on Monday, January 23, 2012, at the Bowie Fire/EMS Station 839. He stated, “For your performance on the scene of the aforementioned incident, you are hereby presented a Fire/EMS Department Emergency Service Award. Congratulations and thank you for an outstanding job. Your actions represent the excellent service our Department strives to provide to the citizens of Prince George’s County.”

Firefighter Suffers Cardiac Arrest Playing Hockey with DCFD Team VS PGFD Team - Assisted by Fellow Firefighters

A District of Columbia Fire Department (DCFD) member was playing hockey in a game that include DCFD versus the PGFD team at the Gardens Ice House in Beltsville on Sunday afternoon in the 5:00 hour. The DCFD member went into cardiac arrest while on the ice just prior to a face-off. Players from both teams initiated CPR and used an Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) on the 30ish year old male.

Prince Georges County Fire/EMS Department Firefighters and Paramedics from Calverton; Paramedic Engine 841 and Ambulance 841, and Laurel; Paramedic Unit 810, arrived and initiated pre-hospital advanced life support measures and transported to a nearby hospital.

The male was revived and stabilized at the hospital and later in the evening was transferred to another hospital with cardiac specialty care.

The patient remains in the critical care unit.

Oxon Hill House Fire

A malfunctioning electrical outlet is being blamed for a fire that caused extensive damage to an Oxon Hill Home. It was just after 8:00 pm on Friday, January 21, when firefighters and paramedics were alerted to a house on fire in the 7900 block of Barrett Road East. Fire/EMS units arrived to find heavy fire showing from the 2-story single family home.

The fire grew quickly consuming both floors with the roof eventually collapsing into the structure. The fire was initially fought from a defensive position outside of the structure, as the conditions inside were untenable. Firefighters flowed thousands of gallons of water into the house to bring the fire under control. The lone adult male occupant was outside and safe.

After nearly 30 minutes of working to knock down the heavy fire, a roof collapse and high amounts of water, firefighters could hear the faint barking of a dog coming from the burned out shell of the structure. They traced the barking to the basement of the home and taking all necessary safety precautions entered the basement and rescued one of the family pets. A Jack Russell Terrier “Bishop” was removed and reunited with his owner. Two other dogs remain unaccounted for.

Fire Investigators believe the fire is “Accidental” and estimate fire loss at about $250,000. The structure is uninhabitable and the owner was receiving assistance with temporary shelter from the County Citizen Services Unit. No firefighter or civilian injuries occurred during this incident.

Updates on Structure Fires and Saturday Morning Weather

Friday and into Saturday morning proved to be a busy day for Prince George’s County Firefighters battling five structure fires in addition to our daily workload of about 350 fire and emergency medical incidents. Furthermore, a 2:00 pm press conference was held announcing a High School Fire/EMS Cadet Pilot Program.

Around 8:00 am, a fire in the kitchen of a College Park home in the 3900 block of Metzerott Road caused $3,000 in fire loss. No injuries. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

At about 10:15 am, workers replacing the roof of the IHOP Restaurant in the 15000 block of Baltimore Avenue in Laurel may have ignited a fire in the roof/ceiling area of the 1-story restaurant. Everyone; patrons, staff and roof workers eventually evacuated safely. Fire loss is estimated at $5,000.

Just after 4:00 pm firefighters responded to a house fire in the 7200 block of Mount Forest Terrace and arrived to find heavy fire conditions on both floors and through the roof of this single family home. One firefighter sustained minor burn injuries. Fire loss is estimated at $150,000 and the cause is under investigation.

At about 7:15 pm a malfunctioning fireplace is being blamed for a townhouse fire in Upper Marlboro. Firefighters battled a fire on the second floor and roof of a 2-story, end of the row, townhouse in the 4700 block of Colonel Ashton Place. Fire loss is estimated at $85,000. One firefighter was injured while fighting the fire sustaining a laceration to his hand. He was treated and released from an area hospital. The family was displaced and assisted by the Citizen Services Unit.

Firefighters responded to a house fire around 12:30 am, Saturday, in Accokeek. Fire/EMS units arrived to find a 2-story brick single family home with a well-advanced fire. Heavy fire consumed all floors and burned through the roof. Fortunately, firefighters were ordered by the Safety Officer and the Services Commander, Lt. Col. Ben Barksdale, to remain outside and not to enter the structure that was already a total loss. As a result there were no injuries. The family received assistance from the Citizen Services Unit. The cause of the fire is under investigation and fire loss is estimated at $250,000.

We are fortunate that the winter mix of snow and ice occurred on a Saturday. A few motor vehicle crashes have occurred, mostly on high-speed limited access highways (I-95, Route 495, B/W Parkway, Branch Avenue). No serious injuries have been reported and our overall activity has been slower than normal. If you don’t need to go out, stay at home until the hazardous conditions have passed. District Heights House Fire

At around 4:00 pm, Friday, January 20, Firefighters from District Heights and surrounding Fire/EMS Stations battled a well-advanced fire. Fire/EMS units arrived at the 2-story, split-level, single family home with fire on both levels and burning through the roof. Firefighters initiated a quick interior search for possible occupants and advanced hose lines inside to start attacking the fire. Conditions on the inside were deteriorating quickly and incident commander ordered all firefighters to evacuate the structure. The bulk of the fire was extinguished in about 15 minutes from the safety of the exterior. Firefighters re-entered the structure to complete the extinguishment.

No injuries, civilian or firefighter, were reported. The fire appears to have started on the lower level of the house and extended to the upper level and through the attic and roof. The cause of the fire is under investigation. Preliminary fire loss is estimated at $150,000.

It appears the house interior may have been going through some type of renovation. No one was inside when firefighters arrived.

Prince George’s County leaders will conduct a press conference to announce a joint partnership between the Fire/Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Department and Public Schools. It appears things could get pretty hot after the press conference on Friday afternoon.

After the formal press conference, a tour of the Fire/EMS Training Academy Emergency Medical Services lab will be provided and after that, things get hot for our participants. County Executive Baker, Dr. Hite and Fire Chief Bashoor will be fitted with firefighters personal protective equipment, including self contained breathing apparatus, and enter the academy burn building where a raging fire awaits them. Will they be able to take the heat?? Can the trio put this fire out?? The answers remain to be seen.

Cause and Origin in Bladensburg Fatal Fire

At around 11:00 am, Wednesday, January 18, firefighters in the Bladensburg area discovered an adult male deceased from thermal injuries. He was found in his apartment on the 6th floor at 5802 Annapolis Road where firefighters had been dispatched to investigate smoke in the hallway.

Fire Investigators believe that the man accidentally ignited his clothing while cooking. The male sustained critical burn injuries and was pronounced deceased on the scene.

Fire Investigators found evidence of a relatively small fire on the stove top, however, damage was minimal.
The cause of the fire is accidental and attributed to cooking with fire loss estimated at $5,000.

The identity of the deceased is not yet confirmed as autopsy results will be required to do so. It is believed that the victim is the occupant that normally resides in the apartment of origin.

This is the first fire fatality in Prince George's County in 2012.

The Hyattsville Volunteer Fire Department recently implemented a Paramedic Ambulance (PA) program that will provide advanced life support (ALS) medical care. The PA operates within the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Operational Program, as managed by the Prince George’s County Fire/EMS Department. It is expected to provide an emergency medical services team with equipment, supplies, and a vehicle for patient transport and emergency medical care out of hospital. The PA has the following capabilities: ALS medical care, staffed with a minimum of one Maryland-licensed and County-certified ALS provider, and one County-certified BLS provider.

Three volunteer members of Hyattsville have successfully completed the requirements to be both Maryland licensed and Prince George’s County certified ALS providers. Additionally, a large contingent of the active volunteer membership already certified as Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT) attended and successfully completed a program to provide ALS assistance. ALS equipment and supplies are maintained by the County Office of Emergency Medical Services and will be provided whenever the PA is placed in service. The PA is scheduled to provide services during 12 hour shifts over the course of upcoming weekends and for special events.

The Laurel Volunteer Rescue Squad has been operating a similar Paramedic Ambulance Program since 2009.

Dave J. Iannone, President of the Hyattsville Volunteer Fire Department, stated, “The Paramedic Ambulance program will positively display our EMS growth to the citizens of Hyattsville and beyond. The Prince George’s County Fire/EMS Department has played an integral role with our station to accomplish this goal and has been key to its launch and continued success.”

Prince George’s County Fire/EMS Chief Marc S. Bashoor said, “I am proud of the Hyattsville volunteers for placing a Paramedic Ambulance in service, thus enabling them to provide that extra level of advance life support service that is so critical to the citizens and residents of Hyattsville and surrounding communities. They have added this service while continuing to give excellent basic life support ambulance, fire suppression, and rescue services.”

The Hyattsville Paramedic Ambulance, PA 801, was placed in service Friday, January 13, 2012, at 7:33 P.M., and dispatched on its first call one minute later. PA 801 responded to five incidents on its first tour of duty and transported someone on each of those incidents, including a person in cardiac arrest. The Hyattsville volunteers also continued to provide EMS services with their second ambulance that was staffed by EMTs. This unit, Ambulance 801, also responded to five calls.

The Prince George’s County Fire/EMS Department is one of the largest combination—career, civilian, and volunteer—departments in the country, with over 800 career and civilian employees and about 1500 active volunteers. Annually, the Fire/EMS Department responds to approximately 130,000 calls for service, of which about 80 percent are EMS-related.

Fire Investigators Investigate Death in Bladensburg Apartment

At about 10:45 am, Wednesday, January 18, Prince George's County Firefighters were alerted to investigate a possible fire in a Bladensburg apartment building. Upon arrival at the Phoenix Apartments, 5802 Annapolis Road, firefighters were directed by maintenance crews to the sixth floor of the 10-story high-rise apartment building.

Firefighters encountered smokey conditions on the sixth floor and upon further investigation, entered an apartment and found a deceased adult male displaying burn injuries. There did not appear to be any other fire damage in the apartment.

Fire Investigators and the Bladensburg Police Department are currently investigating the incident.
No other details are available and updates will be provided as additional information is known.

20 Year Anniversary Memorial Service of the LODD of Kenneth Michael Hedrick

20 Year Anniversary of the LODD

On the evening of the 20th anniversary of the line of duty death of Kenneth Hendrick, the members of the Morningside Volunteer Fire Department held a memorial service. The event was attended by nearly 100 members of the Hedrick family, friends and firefighters. Two volunteer members, currently serving our Country in Afghanistan, attended by way of Skype and interacted with many friends while on line.

A program book for the Memorial Service prepared by the membership of the Morningside Volunteer Fire Department stated the following;

On January 12th 1992, Engine Company 27 was dispatched for a first due house fire at 3807 Walls Lane in Suitland. Kenny had been in the structure and made a rescue of the family's seven year old son. Kenny reentered the house to search for additional victims. While searching the basement, he became trapped under debris and perished.

Kenny had been a member of the department for about two years. Les Hedrick, his father, was Fire Chief at the time but was not on the call. Kenny attended LaPlata High School and had his sights set on becoming a career firefighter in the Washington DC area. Kenny's uncle, Ford Gallagher, at the time was a 12 year veteran of the Prince George's County Fire Department (PGFD).

At Kenny's funeral, PGFD Fire Chief Steve Edwards made Kenny a honorary career firefighter in the PGFD. The new Rescue Squad 27 is dedicated to Kenny. Kenny's parents are still active in the department today; Les serves on the Board of Directors as well as being Vice President and his mother Cathy is still active in the Ladies Auxiliary. Both Les and Cathy are active members in the Fallen Firefighters Foundation and are counselors for families of other fallen firefighters across the Nation. Kenny will be missed by his family both in and out of the fire station. His love and devotion to the fire service will live on as an inspiration to all.

The solemn ceremony opened with prayer of scripture readings by Prince George's County Volunteer Fire/Rescue Association Chaplain Harry Hetz. Prince George's County Fire/EMS Chief Marc Bashoor. Bashoor stated, "Kenny never intended to die. No firefighter does. Like all his brethren in our calling and service, Kenny accepted the daily prospect that he may be called upon to make that sacrifice. He accepted the daily prospect of that potential sacrifice with a full cognizance and awareness of the risks and dangers of the environment we operate in. That is why courage and bravery is not measured solely in the sacrifice that is represented in death: those core virtues are measured in performing the job with the knowledge of the constant danger of death, and yet doing it with all the power within your soul in an manner that seeks to minimize that danger not only for yourself, but for all of those who operate around you."

Kenny's parents, Les and Cathy, attended and participated in the event. Chief Bashoor addressed them by saying, "Yet too often, once the echo of the bagpipes wither away and the units in the funeral procession one by one return to service, we fail to recognize that a family continues to grieve and is too often left unaided to find their way and process their great loss.

That is why I am proud to say that from just days after our Department mourned and buried Kenny, one of my greatest heroes…a true “Profile in Courage” in my own life - has been – and remains to be - Kenny’s mom…Cathy Hedrick.

Cathy lives each and every day in a world of caring and compassion for the tragic loss of others, and through her work, a little bit of Kenny lives on too.

She has the deepest personal knowledge of the scars that such a terrible loss can bring to a family, yet through that tragedy, she has developed and fostered a God-given gift of comfort, compassion and grace that transcends normal human experience.

Cathy, you give so much to others, and it is evident to all who know and meet you that this spirit and motivation exists deep within you. As a loving son, let me publicly proclaim to you on this sad anniversary the words we all know to be true…Kenny is proud of you. I am proud of you. We all are. Cathy, you are truly the “better angel” that all of us strive to one day become."

Cathy and Les together spoke at the podium and thanked everyone for attending. Cathy stated, "the last twenty years would not have been possible without the support of the fire service family." An underlying theme throughout the service was the role of the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation (NFFF) where Cathy and Les first participated in the Survivors Program and are now permanent fixtures.

The event concluded outside at the Memorial Monument dedicated to Kennth Hedrick with bagpipes and prayers.

Congratulations to Volunteer Chief Michael J. White Sr., President David Hansen and the membership of the Morningside Volunteer Fire Department for a "Job Well Done" on the planning and coordination of this special ceremony.

The American Red Cross, Prince George’s County Chapter, held their Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. National Day of Service in the Town of Berwyn Heights today, Monday, January 16, 2012. About 60 members of the community met at the Town of Berwyn Heights Municipal Center to honor and respect Dr. King by offering their to help others.

Participants enjoyed a continental breakfast from 8:00 A.M. until 8:45 A.M. and then listened as speakers provided words of encouragement and thanks. Calvin Hawkins, Citizen Corp and County employee/Department of Homeland Security, led the program and introduced speakers from the Town of Berwyn Heights Town Council, Volunteer Fire Department, RACES, Citizen Corp, WSSC, American Red Cross and the Fire/EMS Department.

Prince George's County Fire/EMS Chief Marc S. Bashoor spoke to the task at hand that include the distribution of emergency preparedness and fire safety information throughout the community of Berwyn Heights. He included several quotes from Dr. King in his comments and spoke of why today was a day for work and not a day off.

At around 9:00 am teams of volunteers went door-to-door, despite chilly temperatures, in Berwyn Heights providing occupants with emergency preparedness information and offered to check on working smoke alarms.

Fire at the University of Maryland Extinguished

At around 3:15 pm, Monday, January 16, 2012, firefighters were alerted to smoke in a educational building on the campus of the University of Maryland in College Park. Fire/EMS units arrived at the JM Patterson Building on Regents Driver and found a working fire in a second floor lab involving electrical components with possible extension to an upper floor.

As a precaution the Department's Hazardous Materials Team was alerted to the incident due to the potential involvement of stored chemicals. No chemicals or hazardous materials were found to be involved with this fire.

With today being a Holiday for the observance of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day and during winter session there were a limited number of people in the building and they all evacuated safely.

The sprinkler system activated and held the fire in check until firefighters arrived and completed the extinguishment. Firefighters were able to quickly extinguish the remaining fire which involved electrical equipment that powers a system that maintains an appropriate atmosphere inside the lab.

There were no injuries. Firefighters remained on the scene ventilating the building of smoke and overhauling the effected area. Damage to the lab is considerable, however, an estimated loss figure is still being tabulated. The scene has been turned over to Environmental Safety and Fire Marshal's office for the University of Maryland for follow-up.

Falcone's Volunteer Fire Service Career Cut Short After Sustaining

Burns in Mount Rainier House Fire

The Hyattsville Volunteer Fire Department is sad to announce the
passing of life member and former live-in Matthew Falcone. Matt is the
brother of current HVFD Vice President and former Deputy Chief Tom
Falcone.

A service to remember Matt will be held Monday, January 16th at 10
a.m. at St. Jerome's Catholic Church, 5205 43rd Avenue in Hyattsville.
A light lunch reception will follow on the St. Jerome's campus.

Matt was a live-in member in the 1980's but his volunteer fire service
career was cut short after he was critically burned as a member of
Truck 1 conducting search and rescue operations at a Mount Rainier
house fire. That fire took place just a year after a fire in the same
area claimed the life of Hyattsville Volunteer Firefighter Alan P.
Sondej, who was a live-in with Matt. His death was not the result of
the burn injuries.

Man Trapped in Mud Rescued by Firefighters in Clinton

Prince George’s County Firefighter/Medics and the Departments Technical Rescue Team rescued a worker that was trapped in mud up to his waist this afternoon. At about 11:45 am, Thursday, January 12, 2012, Fire/EMS units responded to the Cosca Lake, which encompasses about 11 acres and is part of the 690 acre Cosca Regional Park, 11000 Thrift Road in Clinton. Cosca regional Park is managed by the Maryland National Park and Planning Commission.

Cosca Lake is undergoing renovation and has been nearly drained of its water. An employee performing work on the lake became stuck in the muddy lake bed and sunk up to his waist. Firefighters used ground ladders stretched about 65 feet over the ground from shoreline to the victim. Fortunately, the adult male victim was wearing waterproof wading pants. The design of the pants prevented the thick wt mud from compressing the man’s legs, only the pushing up against the exterior of the wading pants.

Firefighters and Technical Rescue team members dug away the top layer of mud and then were able to lift the man up and out of his wading pants that remained stuck in the mud. He was escorted over the ladders to the shoreline where awaiting medics initiated treatment. 27 members of the Fire/EMS Department were on the scene. It required about 45 minutes to effect the rescue after arrival of Fire/EMS units. The man had been trapped in the mud for just over an hour before he was rescued.

The adult male was transported to an area hospital by paramedics but did not appear to have suffered any serious injuries.

Rescue in Progress at Cosca Regional Park Lake in Clinton

Prince George’s County Firefighter/Medics and the Department’s Technical Rescue Team were alerted to a rescue at Cosca Regional Park in Clinton. With over 690 acres located in southern Prince George's County, Cosca Regional Park features both natural, undeveloped areas and land that has been developed for recreational use. The park is located in the 11000 block of Thrift Road.

Fire/EMS units arrived just before 12:00 noon and discovered that Cosca Lake has been mostly drained and a male has become trapped in deep mud up to his waist. The Technical Rescue Team has deployed it’s “collapse” team to effect a rescue. Additional information will be provided as it becomes available.

Departmental Crash in Lanham

At about 8:00 pm a two vehicle collision occurred at Cipriano Road and Brae Brooke Drive in Lanham. A fire department command officer was responding to a house fire when he was involved in a collision with a civilian vehicle. The adult female civilian sustained non life threatening injuries and was transported to an area hospital for evaluation and treatment. The volunteer chief was also transported to an area hospital for injury evaluation and post-crash screening.

The County Police Department will be handling the crash investigation.

The house fire turned out to be a malfunctioning chimney and was handled by first arriving units.

Another community event is being held in the Town of Capitol Heights. The Town of Capitol Heights will host a Community March to commemorate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King on Monday, January 16, 2012 from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm.

This event is titled “Reclaiming the Dream – Uniting the Community”. It has been organized to empower residents and provide information to the community. The march through the Town will feature faith based, business and community leaders including County Fire/EMS Chief Bashoor and other members of the Department. The march will end at the Capitol Heights Fire/EMS Station #805.

Missing search and rescue dog found

WASHINGTON - A missing search and rescue dog who went missing Thursday has been found.

Vito, a 3-year-old black German Shepherd with "brown stockings", was performing a search and rescue exercise with his handler, Sonja Heritage, at White Marsh Park off Route 3 in Bowie, Md. when he apparently got distracted by a fox and ran off Thursday afternoon.

Heritage, the dog's handler, says she got a call from a man named Omar late Saturday who said he had her dog.

"He said 'I have your dog, I have Vito, he's a wonderful dog and I've been taking care of him, and I know he needs to come back home,'" says Heritage.

She met Omar and his family around 12:30 Sunday morning at a gas station to pick up the dog.

"There's not a scratch on him and we can't thank him enough," says Heritage.

"I can't smile any more," she adds.

She still doesn't have all the details on how Omar found Vito, but says he works at Bowie Motors Co., just across the street from the search site.

She says Omar was just treating Vito like a great, mechanic shop dog.

"Everyone was happy all the way around except us I guess," she says.

Now that Vito is back home, she says she can't stop smiling.

Heritage says she plans to learn more about how Omar found Vito later, but now they have a new member of the family.

"He's now our new uncle Omar."

Vito, a member of Fairfax County's urban search and rescue team, will get the Sunday off, but it's back to search and rescue training Monday.

Heritage plastered the Bowie area with fliers and contacted local animal shelters after he went missing.

She says she was elated by the outpouring of support from the community for helping find Vito.

A Fairfax County Urban Search and Rescue dog is the subject of a search that has been ongoing since Thursday, when he disappeared during a training exercise in Bowie, Prince George's County.

Vito, a three-year-old German Shepherd, was being trained to replace his father, Czaro, who had been deployed all over the world as part of Fairfax County's Urban Search and Rescue team. According to Sonja Heritage, Vito's FEMA trainer, the dog was very close to certification when he disappeared.

Vito is described as a large and friendly black German Shepherd who was last seen on Thursday near the intersection of Routes 301 and 450 in Bowie, close to the Shell gas station. Anyone who sees Vito is asked to call (301) 655-7643.

Challenging Rescue of Hunter by Firefighter/Medics in Fort Washington

Prince George's County Firefighters and Paramedics were challenged this afternoon in rescuing a hunter that had suffered a gun shot injury and was located deep in a wooded area.

At about 1:15 pm, Saturday, January 7, Fire Fighter/Medics from the Fort Washington area were alerted to an adult male being shot while hunting. The incident occurred about 1/2 mile off the road in a heavily wooded area near the intersection of Indian Head Highway and Old Fort Road in Fort Washington. The only access to the patient was by foot so personnel carried medical and rescue equipment back into and through the heavily wooded terrain.

The incident commander, Major Ken McSwain, said that today's weather being dry and about sixty degrees assisted crews in quickly accessing, treating and removing the patient. Additionally, weather conditions prevented potential shock related medical injuries to the patient.

Fire Fighter/Medics quickly located the patient and treated the adult male, about 60 years of age, for a gun shot wound to his abdomen. After stabilizing the injury the patient was loaded into a stokes basket and carried out of the woods. There were 15 firefighters and paramedics on the scene that required about 35 minutes to complete this challenging rescue.

Once out of the woods the patient was loaded on-board the awaiting Maryland State Police Helicopter Trooper 2 and flown to a Trauma Center. The victim was classified in "critical" condition.

A firefighter sustained a penetrating injury to his foot during the rescue. He was transported to a nearby hospital where he was treated and released.

The Maryland National Capitol Park and Planning Police Department will be coordinating an investigation into the shooting.

Baden ES Initiates Relief Effort for Displaced Family

A Baden family lost their home and personal possessions in a house fire on Thursday evening, January 5th, and the local elementary school is stepping up to provide some relief. Among items lost was a family Christmas present, a 4-month old puppy, presumed to have perished in the fire. The fire caused an estimated $200,000 in damages and rendered their home on Ashbox Road uninhabitable. An adult female and her young daughter sustained superficial burns, however, are going to be OK and have made their own temporary living arrangements. The cause of the fire was determined to be accidental and attributed to an electrical short that ignited their Christmas tree.

The local elementary school has started a relief effort for the family even though the displaced family is not part of the school. Danielle Goddard, Principal at the Baden Elementary School, notified her staff today of the effort by email and stated;

"I'm saddened to inform you that one of our neighbors on Ashbox Road suffered a house fire last night and the family (mom and daughter) lost everything including the family's Christmas puppy. So sad!

The family is not one of our school families, but I feel compelled to offer assistance despite never meeting them.

As to not overwhelm the family with items, we'll collect gift cards (any amount, any place) and cash to assist with food, clothing, personal items and any other needs.

If you are in a position to assist, please leave your donation with Lavern or Lisa in the front office next week. We'll ensure the family receives all donations directly from Baden Elementary."

Gift card and monetary donations can be dropped off or mailed to the Baden Elementary School, 13601 Baden Westwood Road, Brandywine, MD, 20613. Please do not send cash donations through the mail. Checks should be made out to CASH with a notation ASHBOX RELIEF EFFORT.

When asked why the school would get involved with a family that does not attend their school, Principal Goddard stated, "I don't know the family personally and the young daughter doesn't attend our school, but feel very strongly that local public schools serve as a community liaison especially during such a tragedy. The Baden Community is very strong in serving and we'd like to do anything possible to offer assistance. We're not sure where the family is at this time, but once mom and daughter are settled and at their leisure we'd like to deliver our donations personally."

Fire Chief Marc S. Bashoor and all of the men and women, career, civilian and volunteer, of the Prince George's County Fire/Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Department commend Ms. Goodard, the Baden Elementary School and the Bobcat Family for their initiative in assisting a family that has suffered a tremendous loss. The Baden/Brandywine community should be extremely proud of the school and administrators for demonstrating a true spirit of compassion and giving with this Good Samaritan relief effort. The students should also be proud of their school and use this as an example of being a true member of the community.

Dry Christmas Tree Involved in Brandywine Home Fire with Injury

Just before 9:00 pm, Thursday, January 5, 2012, firefighters from Baden and other surrounding communities, including units from Charles County, were alerted to a house fire. Fire/EMS units arrived on the scene in the 16200 block of Ashbox Road in Brandywine and encountered a 1-story single family home with heavy fire showing. Firefighters initially fought the fire from the exterior of the home and than entered the structure to complete the extinguishment after the bulk of the fire had been knocked down. Two occupants were at home and both were able to exit the home prior to the Fire/EMS Department arrival. An adult female occupant and her daughter sustained minor burns and singed hair were treated on the scene and transported to a local hospital for treatment. The injured occupant told firefighters that a small electrical short ignited the family Christmas tree. The tree suddenly burst into flames causing her injury and spread quickly throughout the house. She described the tree ignition as “exploding.” The structure sustained extensive, if not total, damage and is uninhabitable. The family will be assisted by the County Citizen Services Unit and the American Red Cross with temporary shelter. Fire loss estimates are still being tabulated. A family pet, a 4-month old dog, is missing.

This incident should serve as a warning that if your “live” Christmas tree is still inside your house IT MUST BE REMOVED IMMEDIATELY. Warning - a tree that has already turned dry and brittle needs to be removed immediately to eliminate the increased probability of a fire. The United States Fire Administration (USFA) states that as trees, which are in one-third of all households, dry out, the risk of fires increase.

This video demonstrates just how quick a dry tree is consumed with fire compared to one that has-been well maintained. All trees, regardless of maintenance, will dry out. Remove your tree now and avoid any chance of this occurring in your home.

Remember “Safety First” ensures everyone goes home; it’s beyond time to remove the tree and keep your family safe. This is a good time to remember to check your smoke alarm and carbon monoxide detector to ensure they are working.

Once your tree is outside simply place it on your curb. Never burn your discarded tree.

The Department of Environmental Resources (DER) and Waste Management Division (WMD) is offering recycling services to residents with County - provided yard waste collection. If you live in an incorporated city or municipality, check with your local Department of Environmental Resources and Waste Management offices as many offer similar services.

When Tracy Alane Timmons showed up on Monday, February 8, 1993, for her first day of Career Recruit School (CRS) #25, not even she fathomed that she would one day give new meaning to the term “road doctor.”

In June 1993, Tracy Timmons graduated from the Prince George’s County Fire/Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Department CRS #25 and began her career as a firefighter. After being with the Department for one year, Fire Fighter Timmons cross-trained and became a paramedic. “I realized that I hated not having enough knowledge about what was going on with the patients I was transporting via ambulance. I wanted to know what the paramedics knew,” she said.

During her tenure with the Fire/EMS Department, Fire Fighter/Paramedic Timmons was assigned to Landover Hills Fire/EMS Station 830; Chillum-Adelphi Fire/EMS Station 834; and Glenn Dale Fire/EMS Station 818. She was also a member of the Special Tactical Unit at Tuxedo-Cheverly Fire/EMS Station 822. Always one who desired to help others, she derived fulfillment from her dual status of firefighter and paramedic. However, after a while, she was no longer satisfied with just “knowing what the paramedics knew.” Tracy now wanted to know what those to whom she transported patients—the ER doctors—knew. In December 1995, she acquired a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Maryland. After 7 years with the Fire/EMS Department, Fire Fighter/Paramedic Timmons left to pursue her dream of becoming a doctor. She received her Doctor of Medicine degree in 2004, from the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine in Richmond.

Dr. Timmons’ resume boasts of an extensive list of accomplishments, ranging from Chief Resident of General Surgery with the Virginia Commonwealth University Health Systems to Surgical Critical Care Fellowship with R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center (STC), University of Maryland Medical Center. In 2010, she was appointed Assistant Professor of Surgery at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, where she presently serves. Her clinical activities include: Trauma Surgeon, Surgical Intensivist at R Adams Cowley STC and General Surgeon on emergency surgery at Baltimore Veteran’s Administration Medical Center. Impressively, her publications peer-reviewed journal articles include 1). Lin M, Mohammed H, Brazio P, Lavien G, Lumpkins K, Timmons T. “Sacral osteomyelitis: an unusual complication form foreign body ingestion” (AM Surgeon); and 2). Timmons, T and Menaker, J. “Traumatic brain injury in the elderly” (Clinical Geriatrics 2010; 18:20-24).

A typical work schedule for Dr. Timmons consists of 21-35 consecutive days, followed by a week off. Two out of every 7 days, she works a 24 hour shift. While speaking of her extremely demanding schedule, she jokingly referenced her Fire/EMS Department days, saying, “24/72 was certainly a better schedule! Nevertheless, I love what I do.”

Growing up, for as long as she could remember, Tracy wanted to be a soldier. Her dad was an active service member, and her goal was to follow in his footsteps. She never once thought about a career in medicine until she became a paramedic. She attributes her success as a doctor to the training she received as a paramedic in the Fire/EMS Department. “Being a paramedic was invaluable to becoming a doctor. Because of that, I went into medical school with some life experience.”

“Another reward of being a paramedic,” according to Dr. Timmons, “is when you’re 911, folk are happy to see you show up. As a doctor, the level of gratitude is not the same. Folk have unreal expectations of what doctors know or can do.” Asked if there is any part of being a doctor that she finds difficult, she responded, “I experience great difficulty in dealing with family, as it relates to accepting the reality of the patient’s condition. Another thing that’s difficult for me is losing a patient, as I sometimes do. In those times, I walk away questioning whether there was something I could have done better or differently to change the outcome.”

Describing her special interests and hobbies, 43-year-old Dr. Timmons said she is greatly interested in neurotrauma, which is injury to a nerve, especially part of the central nervous system (the brain and spinal cord). As far as hobbies go, she plays the guitar and is fond of live music—mostly blues and folk. “I also like keeping fit, which I do by walking on the treadmill and weight training. Unfortunately, I don’t have much time to do many of the things I enjoy. I obviously would also love to spend more time at home,” she says.

SAFETY FIRST - Fire/EMS Training Academy Tactics Recognized

Every fire academy in the country teaches their recruits that safety comes first, but Prince George’s County Fire/Emergency Medical Services Department (PGFD) has taken this concept one step further. In addition to the standard firefighting and emergency medical services training, PGFD has found an innovative approach to teach their recruits about the hidden dangers facing firefighters, including cancer. What began as a weekend homework assignment became something much more as a recent recruit class at PGFD set out to investigate the correlation between firefighters and cancer.

The concept is simple, each week the class attending PGFD’s Fire/EMS Training Academy is given weekly assignments that focus on varying health and safety issues, including nutrition, wellness, fitness, NIOSH reports, and of course cancer and its association with firefighters. According to PGFD Fire Chief Marc S. Bashoor, the recruit class has taken this assignment and turned it into a mission that was beneficial for all. He said, “These assignments are geared towards getting recruits to think why we are so adamant about safety. It refocused their training, for example now the recruits know that they want to make sure their face mask has a nice tight seal so that smoke cannot get in because not only can smoke have an immediate affect, but 20 years down the road it can lead to cancer and kill you.”

The Firefighter Cancer Support Network (FCSN) whose mission is to provide support to Fire Department members and their families when dealing with cancer, was excited to learn that PGFD has found a way to integrate this very important education into their recruit classes and hopes that other fire academies will follow PGFD’s lead. Numerous studies have shown that firefighters face a significantly higher chance of being diagnosed with cancer than the public they serve and education is a key factor to helping reduce that risk. One of FCSN’s primary goals is to educate firefighters about the importance of following safety procedures and ways to reduce their risks of contracting cancer. According to FCSN, “Absorption, ingestion, and inhalation are the three leading ways that firefighters are contracting cancer.” Simple steps such as wearing full personal protective equipment, including the self contained breathing apparatus, during and after a fire, as well as showering and cleaning dirty turnouts can all help firefighters lessen their risks to the dangerous cancer causing carcinogens.

Firefighters have an inherently dangerous job and they need to be diligent in their efforts to maintain proper safety protocol because it can save their lives not only in the field, also in the years to come. A recent PGFD Recruit School graduate, Fire Fighter Brian Goldfeder put it, “Some firefighter deaths are not preventable; sometimes we must take big risks to save human lives, however, the past traditions of not wearing SCBA and enjoying dark soot around our noses and mouths after fires, are traditions that belong in the past. Focus on Fire Safety: Heating Fire Safety

The Prince George's County Fire/Emergency Medical Services Department is sharing fire safety and injury prevention advice from our friends at the United State Fire Administration (USFA). The high cost of home heating fuels and utilities has caused many Americans to search for alternative home heating sources such as wood burning stoves, space heaters, and fireplaces. Heating is one of the leading causes of residential fires. Over one-quarter of these fires result from improper maintenance of equipment, specifically the failure to clean the equipment.

Carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning is another danger when using heating equipment fueled by fossil fuel. It occurs most often when equipment is not vented properly. CO deaths have been on the rise since 1999. On average there were 181 unintentional non-fire deaths from CO poisoning associated with consumer products per year from 2004-2006 compared to 123 from 1999-2001 (Source: Consumer Product Safety Commission). Carbon monoxide poisoning is most fatal to adults age 65 or older.

Preventing Home Heating Fires

In 2003-2006, the leading factor contributing to home heating fires (28%) and deaths (46%) was heating equipment too close to things that can burn, such as upholstered furniture, clothing, mattress, or bedding (Source: NFPA). Many heating fires can be prevented by following basic safety tips when dealing with any heating equipment:

Keep or maintain a 3 foot clearance between all heating equipment and anything that can burn.
Inspect and maintain heating equipment regularly for safety.
Be sure to have fixed space heaters installed by a qualified technician, according to manufacturer’s instructions or applicable codes. Or, make sure a qualified technician checks to see the unit has been properly installed.
When buying a new, portable space heater, make sure it has the label showing it is listed by a recognized testing laboratory, such as Underwriters Laboratories (UL).
Space heaters should be turned off every time you leave the room and before going to bed.
Keep space heaters at least 3 feet away from anything that can burn - including furniture, blankets, curtains, and paper products.
Choose space heaters that turn off automatically if they tip over.
Never use a space heater to dry clothing.
Do not use your oven to heat your home.
Install smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside each sleeping area, and on every level of the home. For the best protection, interconnect all smoke alarms throughout the home. When one sounds, they all sound.
Test smoke alarms monthly.
Install and maintain carbon monoxide alarms to avoid risk of carbon monoxide poisoning.

Wood Burning Stoves and Fireplaces

Use a metal or glass fireplace screen to keep sparks from hitting nearby carpets or furniture.

Be sure the fireplace or stove is installed properly. Wood stoves should have adequate clearance (3 feet) from combustible surfaces and proper floor support and protection.

Wood stoves should be of good quality, solid construction and design, and should be evaluated by a nationally recognized laboratory, such as Underwriters Laboratories (UL).
The stove should be burned hot twice a day for 15-30 minutes to reduce the amount of creosote buildup.
Have your chimney inspected annually and cleaned if necessary, especially if it has not been used for some time.
Don’t use excessive amounts of paper to build fires in fireplaces. It is possible to ignite creosote in the chimney by overbuilding the fire.
Make sure your fireplace has a sturdy screen to prevent sparks from flying into the room.
Keep flammable materials away from your fireplace mantel. A spark from the fireplace could easily ignite these materials.
Before you go to sleep, be sure your fireplace fire is out. NEVER close your damper with hot ashes in the fireplace. A closed damper will help the fire to heat up again and will force toxic carbon monoxide into the house.
If synthetic logs are used, follow the directions on the package. NEVER break a synthetic log apart to quicken the fire or use more than one log at a time. They often burn unevenly, releasing higher levels of carbon monoxide.
Do not use flammable liquids to start or accelerate any fire.
Never burn charcoal indoors. Burning charcoal can give off lethal amounts of carbon monoxide.
Allow fireplace and wood stove ashes to cool before disposing in a metal container.

Kerosene Heaters

Read and follow the procedure in the owner’s manual before you attempt to operate or service the unit.
Learn the safety and maintenance procedures necessary to safely operate the heating unit.
Always use water clear K-1 grade kerosene.
Never use gasoline or any other volatile fuels in the unit.
Never refuel the heater indoors, when it is hot, or in use.
Do not fill the fuel tank past the full mark. The space above the full mark is there to allow expansion of the fuel when it is operated.
Always provide adequate ventilation for the unit. Burning kerosene consumes oxygen, and produces carbon monoxide and other dangerous gases which may cause you to suffocate or have other respiratory problems.
Check with your local fire department to make sure kerosene heaters are allowed in your community.

Electric Heaters

Keep space heaters at least 3 feet away from anything that can burn - including furniture, blankets, curtains, and paper products.

Check to ensure the heater has a thermostat control mechanism.
Choose a heater that will turn off automatically if it tips over.
Never dry clothes or store objects on stop of the heater.
Never use extension cords with electric heaters.
Keep anything that may burn at least 3 feet away from the heater.
Never allow children to play with, or around, the heater.
Never place anything inside the grill on the front of the heater.

Carbon Monoxide Safety

Each year unintentional carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning claims hundreds of lives and sends several thousands of people to the emergency room for treatment. At lower levels of exposure, CO causes mild effects that are often mistaken for the flu. These symptoms include headaches, dizziness, disorientation, nausea, and fatigue. The effects of CO exposure can vary greatly from person to person depending on age, overall health, and the concentration and length of exposure.

You can protect yourself and your family by following a few easy steps:

Carbon monoxide is an odorless, colorless and toxic gas. Because it is impossible to see, taste, or smell the toxic fumes, CO can kill before you are aware it is in your home.

CO can come from several sources: gas-fired appliances, charcoal grills, wood-burning furnaces or fireplaces, and motor vehicles.

Install at least one CO alarm with an audible warning signal evaluated by a nationally recognized laboratory, such as Underwriters Laboratories (UL), near sleeping areas and outside individual bedrooms. CO alarms measure levels of the gas over time and are designed to sound an alarm before an average, healthy adult would experience symptoms.
Have your heating system, water heater, and any other gas, oil or coal burning appliances serviced by a qualified technician every year.
Never use your range or oven to help heat your home and never use a charcoal grill or hibachi in your home or garage.
Never keep a car running in a garage. Even if the garage door is open, normal circulation will not provide enough fresh air to reliably prevent a dangerous buildup of CO.

Having a working smoke alarm dramatically increases your chances of surviving a fire. And remember to practice a home escape plan frequently with your family.  County residents can call 301-864-SAFE (7233) and have a working smoke alarm installed in your home, free of charge.

We recommend you adopt the TOP TEN Fire/EMS Department Smoke Alarm Resolutions for the New Year. These are listed in no particular order, as they are all important.

I will maintain a working smoke alarm that emits a loud warning when smoke is detected. It must be tested monthly, a fresh battery provided once a year and cleaned every so often.

I will check my smoke alarms monthly by pushing the test button on the front cover and listen for a warning signal. No sound = no protection. Not working?? Replace battery or entire alarm.

I will check my smoke alarms on the first of every month. The number one is easy to remember and should remind you "Safety First" and "your family comes first."

I will provide my smoke alarms with a fresh battery at least once a year. The day you provide a fresh battery should be consistent each year; your birthday, your spouses birthday, your oldest child’s birthday, a holiday, change-your-clock/change your battery.

I will designate one family member to be responsible for testing smoke alarms monthly and replacing the battery once-a year. Everyone in the family should be made aware of the responsible person and reminders should be encouraged.

I will replace my smoke alarm if it is 10 years old and than every 10 years after. A properly maintained smoke alarm (fresh batteries yearly and cleaned) works hard to protect you and your family every second of every day. The alarm wears out and is not as reliable as it was when you first installed it; replace it every ten years.

I will include my smoke alarms when I perform household cleaning. Use a vacuum wand or clean rag to remove any dust that may have accumulated. Dust particles may affect the timely sounding of the alarm.

I will install working smoke alarms on every level of my home. Most importantly is to have one in hallways outside of sleeping areas.

I will install a working smoke alarm in bedrooms where my family members sleep with their bedroom doors closed.

I will know and ensure my family knows what to do when a smoke alarm sounds – “get down, get low, get out.” Have a family escape plan and practice it to ensure everyone knows two ways out of every room in the house and designate a meeting place outside when 911 can be called in safety.

A working smoke alarm provides you an early warning of a fire in your home. Your chances of surviving a fire in your home is increased by 50% by having a working smoke alarm. Having a family home escape planned and practiced increases your chances of survival even more.

A working smoke alarm allows home occupants to escape safely and make a quick notification to the fire department equating to an earlier arrival and mitigation of the fire before it is allowed to spread thereby saving property and helping firefighters to stay safe and go home after every call.

Leave Fireworks Out of Your New Year Celebrations

The use of fireworks on New Years Eve into New Years Day is second only to the Fourth of July. Citizens, residents and visitors should be aware that the use of all consumer fireworks in Prince George's County is illegal. Firefighters and Paramedics recommend that you leave the pyrotechnics to the experts and leave fireworks out of your celebration planning.

Prince George’s County has banned the sale, use and possession of these fireworks based on the danger to our citizens caused by the misuse of these products. The danger is particulary high and a matter of concern for firefighters and paramedics as many New Year celebrations involve the consumption of alcohol. Alcohol may impair the judgement and common sense of the most well-intentioned individual and cause injury to themselves or innocent by-standers and ignite a fire.

The Law in Prince George’s County.

• It is illegal for any person to manufacture, possess, store, offer for sale, sell, discharge, use, burn, or explode any fireworks in Prince George's County, Maryland, except that an authorized display may be conducted by a licensed pyrotechnic professional. Penalties for violations of the law include a fine of up to $1,000 and/or six months in jail.

• Each year, thousands of people are injured and some killed in accidents involving the use of fireworks. These primarily involve those fireworks classified as 1.4g explosives by the U.S. Department of Transportation, commonly referred to as "consumer fireworks."
