A promotion to a higher rank is a result of hard work, self sacrifice and many hours studying promotional material. A promotion to a higher rank is always a proud moment and marks the completion of a long process. It’s also a prestigious moment when the County Fire Chief personally visits your station and presents you with your certificate and letter of promotion. A promotional event is certainly enhanced when family is there to participate and witness the occasion.
On Tuesday, August 17, 2010, Fire Chief Eugene A. Jones visited the Allentown Road Fire/EMS Station to personally recognize Melissa D. Smothers on her promotion to the rank of Fire Fighter/Medic Lieutenant. In attendance was Melissa’s father; Robert J. Smothers. Robert is a 20-year employee of the Fire/EMS Department. He is currently assigned to Apparatus Maintenance as a Heavy Equipment Mechanic. Chief Jones noted the tradition of family members following the career path of a parent and was excited to see father and daughter celebrating the promotion.
Melissa D. Smothers joined the Fire/EMS Department in November 1999 as a member of Career Recruit School #30. She is currently assigned to the Allentown Road Fire/EMS Station #832 as the shift commander on “A” shift. Congratulations to Melissa on her promotion and to Robert on this very proud moment.
