MEDIA CONTACT: Paul Cruz, Major/Acting PIO, 301-883-7154
At about 9:35pm, Friday, November 04, 2011, Fire/EMS units were alerted to a motor vehicle accident in the area of East-bound John Hanson Highway (Route 50) and Martin Luther King Jr. Highway (Route 704). Firefighters and Paramedics arrived on the scene and discovered a three-vehicle accident with one of the vehicles on fire near the median. There were a total of four adult patients that had sustained injuries and two children fatalities. The children were in the vehicle fire and several motorists including two off-duty police officers and a volunteer firefighter tried to rescue the children prior to Fire/EMS units arriving but were unable to due to the extreme heat. All four patients, two adult males and two adult females, were transported to area hospitals for non-life threatening injuries. The entire east-bound and two west-bound lanes of Route 50 was shutdown while authorities conducted their investigation.
The Maryland State Police-College Park Barrack are investigating the crash and will be the point of contact for additional information.
