Firefighters performed a dramatic and extensive high-angle rescue this morning including the extrication of a trapped person. Just before 4:00 am, Saturday, November 3, Fire/EMS units were alerted to a single vehicle crash on the inner-loop of the Capital Beltway just before Kenilworth Avenue in Greenbelt. The car, for whatever reason, left the roadway, down a steep embankment and overturned in a drainage culvert approximately 25-feet below grade. Firefighters on-board the heavy-duty rescue squad from Berwyn Heights performed the challenging high-angle rescue and extrication. The lone patient in the vehicle was lifted from the culvert on a stokes basket hoisted by ropes and pulleys.
The patient was transported to a Trauma Center with non-life threatening injuries. Any follow-up information can be provided by the Maryland State Police - College Park Barracks.
