Busy Shift for PGFD on Monday

Monday, October 19, 2015 proved to be a busy day for firefighters in Prince George's County, Maryland.  These incidents that required some level of suppression and caused monetary loss to property.  Yesterday, in general, was an above average day for the entire Department.  The Department responds annually on about 142,000 calls for service which averages out to 389 per day.  During the 24-hour period yesterday the Department answered an above average number of incidents; 448 calls for service.  Monday was not a record day as far as fires or number of incidents but certainly was busy.

Fire Investigators also remained busy while investigating the majority of our seven working fires and processing three juveniles teenagers that are suspects for a set fire to a structure yesterday.

Naturally when the Fire/EMS Department is busy so are the men and women of our Public Safety Communications.  The call takers, dispatchers and supervisors did a tremendous job in handling the calls for service and during our seven working incidents.

One consistent among the seven incidents is that there were no civilian or firefighter injuries.

Here is a list of incidents that occurred yesterday:

7:45 am - 6707 Seat Pleasant Drive, Seat Pleasant.  Single family home.  Accidental fire caused by an unattended space heater..  Fire loss estimated at $20,000.  Family displaced.  No injuries.

9:10 am - 4802 Megan Drive, Clinton.  Single family home.  Accidental fire caused by a malfunctioning fireplace/chimney.  Fire loss estimated at $25,000.  Family displaced.  No injuries.

10:35 am - 9710 Old Allentown Road, Allentown.  Single family home.  Incendiary fire to a vacant dwelling.  Fire loss estimated at $1,000.  3 juvenile teens arrested.  No injuries.

12:00 pm - 182 Greenmeadow Way, Upper Marlboro (LARGO).  4-story apartment building.  Accidental fire originating on the balcony of 4th floor unit with extension into apartment and attic area.  Fire loss estimated at $200,000.  16 families displaced.  No injuries.

3:04 pm - 6514 Eaglewing Lane, Oxon Hill.  Single family home.  Accidental fire caused by cooking.    Fire loss estimated at $30,000. No injuries.

5:48 pm - 10807 Hollaway Drive, Upper Marlboro.  Single family home.  Accidental fire caused by heat from generator igniting combustibles outside with some extension to siding of house.  Estimated fire loss at $2,000.  No injuries.

9:35 pm - 6835 3rd Street, Riverdale/Lanham.  Single family home.  Cause of the fire is under investigation.  Fire loss is estimated at $150,000.  Occupants displaced.  No injuries.

The Prince George's County Fire/Emergency Medical Services Department is the busiest and largest combination; volunteer, civilian and paid, Departments in the Country.  We have 45 Fire/EMS Stations covering 500 square miles and a population of over 900,000.  Staffing includes 1600 volunteers and 860 paid personnel.
