Two Sunday Morning Fires Quickly Extinguished

Prince George’s County Firefighters battled two dwelling fires this morning. The first incident occurred just before 4:00 AM, Sunday. September 13, 2009, at an unoccupied single family dwelling in the 700 block of Manning Road East in Accokeek. The fire appears to have started in a first floor bedroom and extended up into the attic before firefighters were able to knock the fire down. There were no injuries and the cause of the fire is under investigation. Fire loss is estimated at $10,000.

At about 7:30 AM, Firefighters from the Hyattsville area were alerted to a multi-family dwelling fire at 3219 Toledo Place. Firefighters arrived and located the fire on the first floor of an apartment building and quickly extinguished the fire. A firefighter sustained burn injuries to his hands and was treated and released from the Burn Unit. A space heater is being blamed for igniting nearby combustibles and fire loss is estimated at $60,000. At least two families will be displaced and they are being assisted by apartment complex management.

Citizens and residents are reminded to give space heaters space; at least 3 feet away from any combustible materials.
