At about 8:15 PM, Monday, October 5, 2009, Firefighters and Paramedics from the Landover Hills area and surrounding communities were alerted to a house fire. Fire/EMS units arrived on the scene in the 4800 block of Trenton Road and discovered a fire in a bedroom of this 1-story, non-sprinklered, single family home. The fire was extinguished by firefighters and contained to the room of origin. Fire loss is estimated at $10,000. Three occupants of the home will be displaced and were assisted by the Fire/EMS Department Citizen Services Unit (CSU) and the Red Cross. There were no reported injuries. Fire Investigators ruled this fire accidental and identified an electrical malfunction as the cause.
Another bedroom fire occurred at about 4:15 AM, Tuesday, October 06, 2009 at a 1-½ story, non-sprinklered, single family home in the 5000 block of Emo Street in Capitol Heights. Firefighters extinguished a fire in a bedroom. The fire caused an estimated $10,000 in damages. Ten occupants of the house, 7 adults and 3 children, were assisted by the Departments CSU and Red Cross with temporary shelter. The cause of this fire remains under investigation and there were no reported injuries.
An activated sprinkler system held a kitchen fire in check at a popular restaurant until firefighters arrived to complete the extinguishment. At around 5:10 AM, Tuesday, October 06, 2009, firefighters from the Greenbelt Fire/EMS Station were alerted to investigate an activated fire alarm at Jaspers Restaurant, 7401 Greenbelt Road in Greenbelt. As firefighters approached the scene they saw fire coming from the kitchens ventilation system and summoned the assistance of additional firefighters. Firefighters worked for about 40 minutes to bring the fire under control. It appears that a malfunction in a grease fryer ignited the fire which extended into the walls and ceiling area of the establishment. There were no civilian or firefighter injuries and fire loss is estimated at $50,000.
