3-Alarm Fire on Maxwell Drive will Displace 15 Families

Just before 2:00 PM, Thursday, December 24, 2009, Firefighters and Paramedics from the Suitland area were alerted to an apartment fire. Firefighters from the Morningside Fire/EMS Station were the first to arrive at 6388 Maxwell Drive in Suitland and encountered a 3-story garden style apartment building with fire showing from the second floor. The fire extended through the top floor and eventually through the roof of the original apartment building and then extended into an adjacent building. A Second and Third Alarms were sounded bringing about 80 firefighters and paramedics to the scene. One firefighter sustained 1st and 2nd Degree burns and has been transported to the Burn Unit at the Washington Hospital Center. The 27 year-old firefighter is in good condition. There were no reported civilian injuries.

It appears that 15 apartments will be declared uninhabitable and residents will be displaced. The total number of displaced residents and where they will be relocated to is not known at this time.

The cause of the fire is under investigation and damage estimates are still being tabulated.
