Bladensburg House Fire Displaces Family of Four

Firefighters extinguished a basement fire that displaced a Bladensburg family from their home. At about 4:30 PM, Tuesday, January 26, 2010, Fire/EMS units were dispatched to a 911 report of smoke coming from a house at 5413 Gallatin Street. An engine and ladder truck from Bladensburg were the first to arrive and encountered a 1 ½ story, cape cod style, single family home with smoke showing. Firefighters soon located a fire in the basement and had the bulk of the fire knocked down in about 15 minutes. Four adults that reside in the house will be displaced and are being assisted by the Fire/EMS Departments Citizens Services Unit and the Red Cross. Fire Investigators believe the cause was accidental and attributed to an overloaded electrical cord. Fire loss is estimated at $25,000. No injuries were reported.
