Small Bladensburg Fire Quickly Extinguished

An adult female and her feline companion were assisted to safety by firefighters from her smoke-filled first floor apartment. At about 8:00 am, Friday, June 4, 2010, fire/EMS units from Bladensburg and surrounding communities were alerted to an apartment fire at the Kenilworth Towers, a 6-story apartment building, located at 3801 Kenilworth Avenue. A small fire started by the doorway of her first floor apartment blocking the egress of the occupant. She retreated to the safety of her balcony where she remained until firefighters arrived. Firefighters extinguished the small fire and removed the adult female and her cat off of the balcony by way of a ground ladder. Despite receiving a small burn on her hand, the patient refused transport to a hospital. The cat was reported unharmed.


The majority of the buildings occupants sheltered in place during the 15-minute fire department operation. The fire is under investigation and preliminary damage estimates are about $5,000.
