Sunday, July 3, was a busy day for Prince George’s County Firefighter/Medics.  Fire/EMS crews battled five fires at homes, treated two injured firefighters and tended to patients burned during an outdoor cookout.

The first incident occurred at about 2:45 pm at an Allentown home in the 4500 block of Lujean Lane.  An overloaded power strip in a first floor bedroom ignited a fire that caused about $30,000 in fire loss.  Twenty-five firefighters extinguished the fire in about 10 minutes.  The family was displaced and assisted by the Red Cross with temporary housing.  A firefighter sustained an injury to his back while battling the blaze.  He was transported to an area hospital where he was treated and released.

Firefighters were summoned to a Chillum home where smoke filled the structure at 4:30 pm.  Firefighter/Medics responded and arrived within minutes to the single-family home in the 1100 block of Oakdale Drive.  They quickly located an electrical fire within the walls and were able to control the fire and limit any extension.  Despite $7,500 in estimated fire loss the family was able to remain in the house.  There were no injuries reported.

At about 6:15 pm Fire/EMS units were alerted to a fire in a kitchen of a home in the 4000 block of Elmcrest Lane in Bowie.  Firefighters arrived and found that a residential sprinkler system had already extinguished the fire.  Fire loss was estimated at $5,000, however, would have been considerably higher had it not been for the sprinkler system.  The family was not displaced and allowed to remain in their home.  No injuries were reported.

Just after 7:00 pm, firefighters from the Largo-Kettering area were alerted to smoke inside of a townhouse in the 11000 block of Spring Lake Drive.  Upon arrival crews located a small fire in the basement and quickly extinguished it.  Fire loss was limited to $1,500 and the family was not displaced.  A firefighter sustained a laceration to his hand during overhaul operations and was transported to an area hospital where he was treated and released.  The cause of this fire remains under investigation.

At about 7:15 pm, a house fire occurred after a powerful thunderstorm had rolled through the County.  A lightening strike is being blamed for igniting the roof of a house in the 13000 block of Marthas Choice Circle in Bowie.  There were about 40 firefighter/medics on the scene that took about 20 minutes to extinguish the fire located in the roof of the home.  No injuries were reported at this fire that caused an estimated $15,000 in fire loss.  The County Citizen Services Unit was assisting the family.

At about 8:30 pm, firefighter/medics responded to a home in the 100 block of 68th Place in Seat Pleasant for an outdoor back-yard cooking mishap.  A large pot of boiling grease was accidentally knocked over spilling the hot liquid and causing splatter burns onto several people.  EMT’s and Medics tended to several family members but only one, a teen-aged female, required transportation to an area hospital.  She suffered burns to her foot and was transported in “good” condition for treatment of her injuries.  Other family members were treated on the scene and did not require hospitalization.

Dispatchers at Public Safety Communications handled 425 calls for service during the 24-hour period.  A normal Sunday would produce an average of about 350 calls for service.
