MEDIA CONTACT: Mark E. Brady, Chief Spokesperson, 240-508-7930

A Prince George's County Ambulance was involved in a three vehicle motor vehicle crash involving injuries.  The ambulance involved was transporting a patient to Southern Maryland Hospital when the crash occurred.  The incident happened at the intersection of Branch Avenue and Surrats Road in Clinton just after 5:00 pm.

The ambulance, with all emergency warning devices on and activated, made a left hand turn from south-bound Branch Avenue to go onto Surrats Road.  A collision occurred when a tow truck traveling north on on Route 5 broadsided the ambulance.  The ambulance then struck a passenger vehicle.  The County Police Department are investigating the crash and indicated that traffic citations are pending against the tow truck driver.  The ambulance incurred significant damage.  Initial estimates are approximately $25,000 in damages and there is a possibility that the unit could be deemed a total loss.

Both members on-board the ambulance sustained injuries and were transported to separate hospitals.  The driver of the ambulance, a career Firefighter/Medic, was listed as a Category C Trauma and transported to a Trauma Center.  After an evaluation by the trauma staff, they indicate that his injuries are not considered serious.  The volunteer firefighter/EMT providing care to the patient in the back of the ambulance sustained less serious injuries and was transported to Southern Maryland Hospital.

The original patient being transported to the hospital continued their transport to the hospital on-board another ambulance.  It is unknown if they sustained any injuries.

An occupant of a vehicle involved in the crash, 30ish/male, was transported to a Trauma Center as a precaution.  His injuries are not considered serious and are non life threatening.

A joint crash investigation will continue by the County Police Department as well as safety officers from the Fire/EMS Department.
