A house fire in the 5200 block of Palco Place in College Park at about 5:00 am, Sunday, November 10, resulted in both long-time occupants sustaining injuries, one being fatal.  Firefighters arrived at the 2-story single family with heavy fire on the top floor of the home.  A female occupant was able to escape but her husband could not.

The female, 80ish years of age, was transported to an area hospital suffering from smoke inhalation. She is listed in serious but stable condition.  Her husband was found deceased on the second floor after the fire was extinguished.  While the deceased is believed to be the 82-year-male home owner, an autopsy will be required to confirm positive identification.

The status of a smoke alarm in the residence is unknown.

The cause of the fire remains open and under investigation. Fire loss is estimated at $100,000.  As is standard procedure in any incident that involves a fire fatality, the County Police Homicide Unit is assisting Fire Investigators until a cause of death has been identified by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.

Firefighters will be returning to the Sunnyside Community of College Park on Monday. They will go door-to-door checking smoke alarms and providing residents with fire safety information.
