Members of the
Prince George’s County Fire/Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Department,
primarily the stations within our Fourth Battalion, continue their relief
efforts with a family displaced by a home fire.
Yesterday,
firefighters delivered toys and gift cards to the Rojas family. Their apartment was gutted after an
accidental fire on Sunday evening. The
family of four lost everything and escaped only with the clothes they were
wearing.
Firefighters purchased the gift cards with their own money.
The County
Citizen Services Unit and Bill Milligan, Executive Director of the Public
Safety Assistance Program, worked collectively with the American Red Cross securing food vouchers and a 4-night stay at a local hotel for the family.
Tuesday morning
the family came by the Bunker Hill Fire/EMS Station 855. Fourth Battalion
Commander Brian Frankel and Battalion Firefighter/Medics were able to provide
them three bins of clothing and toiletry items.
Fire
Lieutenant Ashley Breen, Adelphi Fire/EMS Station 834, using her personal
funds, went to Walmart last night and purchased clothing for the family and
will deliver the package tonight via Santa on Truck 834. The Rojas family is staying at the Comfort
Inn, 9020 Baltimore Avenue in College Park.
Truck 834 is scheduled to arrive at the hotel around 5:00 pm.
Frankel
stated, “The family was very appreciative and could not stop smiling! I
am very proud of those who selflessly took the time to help this family out.”
Prince George’s
County Fire Chief Marc S. Bashoor stated, “I’m proud of our firefighter/medics
and their efforts to make the days brighter and keep Christmas in the lives of
the Rojas family. The 4th
Battalion has gone above and beyond what would normally be expected and I commend them for their actions.”
