Plenty of Special Events in County This Weekend

The Prince George’s County Fire/Emergency Medical Services Department has a busy weekend planned and this does not even count the 450 or so incidents we will respond to each day.  Please review the planned activities and take some time to join us.  Of course we all remember that Sunday, September 11, has special meaning to everyone, in particular, firefighters.

The 2016 Prince George’s County Fair returns to the Equestrian Center in Upper Marlboro.  The County Fair will be held September 8 – 11.  For additional information, click here.

The 2016 National Capital Region 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb & 5K Walk hosted by The Prince George's County Fire/EMS Department will be held this Saturday, September 10, 2016.  You can register on-site as early as 6:00 am.  The stair climb and 5K will start at 8:47 am.  Media celebrities Hillary Howard and Dave Statter will serve as our Masters of Ceremonies.  This year’s event will be held at the Gaylord National Hotel and Convention Center at the National Harbor.  For additional information, click here.

In conjunction with the Memorial Stair Climb and 5K the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation will hold a St. Florian 9-11 Antique Fire Apparatus Muster Approximately 100 antique fire apparatus will be on display around National Harbor. Admission is free. T-shirts sold benefit the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation & St. Florian 9-11 Lodge No. 238.  Additionally, a Bull & Oyster Roast will be held.  Enjoy beer, wine, oysters, pork, beef, and all the fixings under the tent along the Potomac River. Benefits the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation.  For additional information about the day’s events at the National Harbor, click here.

The Prince George’s County Professional Fire Fighters and Paramedics Association will hold the 43rd Annual International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) Softball Championship again this weekend.  Games will run from September 8 – 11 at Watkins Park in Kettering, MD.  Firefighters from across North America will gather to crown a softball champion but more importantly raise funds for the research of a cure for muscular dystrophy.  IAFF Local 1619 has raised over $2 million toward this effort.   For additional information, click here.

The Washington Nationals will be hosting “Heroes Day” at their home game on Sunday, September 11th against the Philadelphia Phillies to commemorate the lives lost and forever impacted by the events of September 11, 2001.  The Nationals are inviting first responders to participate in an honorary pregame ceremony. 150 Law Enforcement and Fire/EMS responders from area jurisdictions are expected to participate.  The Prince George's County Fire/EMS Department will be represented by 33 members with the majority coming from the Forestville Fire/EMS Department.  Forestville has dealt with a tragic on duty death of a Firefighter/Medic, the job related death of a Firefighter/Medic of cancer and a injury to a member from a crash that has been unable to work.
