Metro plans full-scale emergency response drill at Southern Ave Station Sunday in Prince George's County, November 6 
Metro Transit Police, Prince George’s County and the District of Columbia will conduct a full-scale emergency response drill Sunday, November 6, at Southern Ave Metrorail Station to practice the evacuation of a train during a smoke incident.

The exercise will take place on the Green Line approaching Southern Ave to allow emergency responders to test their ability to evacuate a disabled train that has encountered smoke in the tunnel.  In addition the drill will simulate real-world conditions to establish operational coordination and communication, critical transportation and emergency medical response.
WHEN:  The exercise will begin at 8:30 a.m. and is expected to conclude no later than 2:00 p.m.

This will be Metro’s seventh full-scale emergency drill since last year.  The exercises, done quarterly throughout the region, are designed to improve emergency response during major incidents.
About 150 volunteers and first responders are expected to attend.

Customer Information:
  • Green Line trains will operate in two segments from opening until approximately 2:00 p.m. between Branch Avenue and Congress Heights and between Greenbelt and Congress Heights. Customers will need to transfer at Congress Heights to continue their trip.
  • Metro will notify customers when normal operations resume via email, text message and social media. To receive notifications, sign up for MetroAlerts.
  • Regular route Metrobus service will operate normally.
  • Members of the public in the area of Southern Avenue may notice a large number of emergency vehicles on site. Please be assured that this is only a drill.

Credential members of the media are invited to attend.  Media must check in by 8:00 a.m. Parking is available for live trucks in the HOV parking lot.
The exercise will begin at 8:30 a.m. and is expected to conclude no later than 2:00 p.m.
