Firefighter Arrested (CORRECTION MADE on 2-20-2018)

On February 13, 2018, A 19 year old Prince George’s County resident and volunteer firefighter, Mr. Tyree Torney, was arrested for allegedly entering Suitland High School on February 12, 2018, and starting a fire.  Suitland High School was occupied by various teachers and support staff at the time of the fire. This incident was investigated by Fire Investigators from the Prince George’s County Office of the Fire Marshal and the Prince George’s County Police Department’s Arson Task Force. During the course of the investigation, Mr. Torney admitted to his involvement in other incidents highlighted below.

His initial volunteer firefighter application was submitted on February 5, 2017and Mr. Torney was currently a probationary member of the Glenn Dale Volunteer Fire Association (Co. 818). Torney has been removed from all affiliations and operations with the Fire/EMS Department.

Incident 1:
May 2, 2017 - Mr. Torney has admitted to setting a bridge on fire at 635 Stretford Way, Hyattsville, Maryland 20785 For that incident, Mr. Torney has been charged with:
·         2nd Degree Arson
·         Malicious Burning 1st Degree
·         Malicious Destruction of Property (over $1000)

Incident 2:
On June 10, 2017 - The Fire/EMS Department was alerted to 14302 Marlborough Lane, Upper Marlboro, MD 20772 Units arrived to find an occupied two-story, end unit townhome with fire on the exterior of the Bravo side of the home. The fire quickly spread up the exterior and into the attic. This townhome was occupied by 4 adults and 1 infant who were all sleeping at the time of the fire. One of the occupants was Mr. Torney’s ex-girlfriend. They allegedly had broken up in May 2017. For that incident, Mr. Torney has been charged with:
·         5 counts of Attempted 1st Degree Murder
·         1st Degree Arson
·         2nd Degree Arson
·         Malicious Burning 1st Degree
·         5 counts of Reckless Endangerment

Incident 3:
February 12, 2018 - The Fire/EMS Department was alerted to an incendiary fire at Suitland High School and an investigation revealed that a suspect entered the school and set a fire in the building, which was still occupied by various teachers and support staff. For this incident, Mr. Torney has been charged with: 
·         1st Degree Arson
·         2nd Degree Arson
·         Malicious Burning 1st Degree
·         2nd Degree Burglary
·         Malicious Destruction of Property (Over $1000)
·         Trespassing on Posted Property
