Apartment Fire Forces Day Care Evacuation and Displaces Family




Prince George’s County Firefighters handled an apartment fire that involved the evacuation of a day care center. At about 10:30 AM, Friday, September 18, 2009, firefighters and paramedics from the District Heights area responded to 6912 Walker Mill Road, a 4-story garden style apartment building in the Capital Courts complex. Upon arrival, heavy smoke was coming from a top-floor apartment window. The building, including a terrace-level day care center, was evacuated prior to the Fire Departments arrival.

There were 30 firefighters/medics operating on the scene and had the fire contained and extinguished with 7 minutes of their arrival. The cause of the fire is under investigation with an area of origin being a hallway closet. Fire loss is estimated at $25,000. There were no injuries. The apartment of origin is uninhabitable and the residents will be displaced and relocated to another unit within the complex.
