At 1:40 PM, Saturday, January 30, 2010, firefighters and paramedics from Prince George’s and Charles County were alerted to a house fire with a report of an occupant trapped. Amid a winter storm with heavy snowfall and hazardous driving conditions firefighters from Accokeek were the first to arrive at 1:51 PM at 2707 Accokeek Road. Firefighters encountered a 1-story, non-sprinklered, single family rambler home with heavy fire showing. An adult female occupant was immediately located and soon declared deceased on the scene. There were 35 firefighters on the scene that required 20 minutes to extinguish the fire. Six family pets, 5 dogs and 1 cat, perished in the blaze. Two family pets, 1 dog and 1 rabbit, survived.
The Fire/EMS Department Citizens Services Unit assisted two other family members displaced with temporary shelter. Fire Investigators from the Departments Office of the Fire Marshal, assisted by the County Police Homicide, have labeled this incident as open and on-going. Identity of the deceased will be withheld pending confirmation by the Medical Examiner. There was an estimated $150,000 in fire loss and no additional civilian or firefighter injuries were reported.
