Firefighter/Medics Particpate in Christmas in April

Prince George’s County Firefighter/Medics participated in the Christmas in April Program on Saturday, April 24, 2010. About 50 members of the Fire/EMS Department provided their time and labor to work on five homes and a church. This is the 22nd year of Christmas in April in Prince George’s County of preserving and revitalizing houses and communities.

One of the homes, 1400 block of Asbury Court in Hyattsville, had a crew performing interior painting, wood floor repair and general maintenance work. The resident, Jeannette Carson claimed, “This is a wonderful wonderful event, senior citizens on fixed incomes have a difficult time in maintaining a home by yourself. This work is something that I could never do.”

Carmen Mitchell of Brentwood welcomed the Firefighters and volunteers from “Do It Herself” to her home in the 3700 block of 40th Place. “Everyone is very friendly and helpful,” she said. Outside work included scraping off old paint and applying a new coat on the railings, steps and patio, as well as lawn mowing and general repairs and maintenance.

Fire/EMS Department Major Dave Borchardt was the overall coordinator for the Department said, “I’m happy with the turnout of personnel and that weather was cooperating by providing a beautiful morning to knock out a lot of outdoor projects.”

The Fire/EMS Department also worked on homes in Landover, Oxon Hill, Capitol Heights and a church in Croom and donated 100 smoke alarms to the program.
