Youth Ministry Honors Fire/EMS Line of Duty Death Memorial by Taking Action

The most honored place within the Prince George’s County Fire/Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Department is the Line of Duty Death (LODD) Memorial and Founders Circle. The LODD and Founders Circle honor members of the Department that made the ultimate sacrifice while performing Fire/EMS duties and those that passed away while on-duty and performing support activities for the Department. The Founders Circle honors those members that made a significant contribution to their respective department and corporation. The memorial area contains gardens, which help to enhance and highlight the area to generate the respect that such a memorial deserves. The LODD Memorial and Founders Circle is located the Cranford-Graves Fire Services Building, 6820 Webster Street, in Landover Hills.

On Sunday, March 18, 2012, a church youth group volunteered to accept the responsibility to work on the gardens surrounding the LODD Memorial and Founders Circle. Fire Fighter/Medic Will Stein, Station 830-C, is a member of this group and thought that this would be an excellent project for the youth ministry of “Lovin’ Life Ministries” to take on. In seeking permission from the Department to work at the memorial, Stein stated, “My church has a group of competent, young volunteers who perform community service on a regular basis. They are inspired about honoring the fire service by planting new flowers at the memorial in front of the Fire Services Building.

Lovin’ Life Ministries is based at the New Hope Academy in Landover Hills and according to Pastor Randy Francis, the youth ministry performs community services projects frequently. Pastor Francis joined the 14 members of the youth ministry in cleaning out the garden and planting flowers and plants. He said that many members of the youth ministry were part of Boy Scout Troop 1212 that has produced 26 Eagle Scouts over the past 15 years.

Kaeleigh Moffitt is a Youth Pastor and coordinated the volunteer workers and was honored to be working at such a dignified location that pays homage to fallen heroes and founding members of the Fire/EMS Department. The group weeded the gardens, removed accumulated debris, planted flowers and plants and improved the overall appearance of the memorial area.

I hope members of the Fire/EMS Department will take time this week to go by the LODD Memorial and see for themselves what a wonderful job the Lovin’ Life Ministries youth group did to ensure that our solemn area has a beautiful garden.
