At about 2:15 pm, Saturday, January 12, firefighters from Upper Marlboro and other nearby communities were alerted to a house fire.

Fire/EMS units arrived at a 2-story single family home in the 15400 block of Mount Calvert Road to find heavy fire consuming the house. The fire was so well advanced that firefighters could not enter the structure and had to battle the blaze from exterior defensive positions.

This home is located in the rural tier where there are no fire hydrants. Water to battle the fire was shuttled in and delivered by water tankers.

The fire took about 90 minutes to bring under control by the nearly 45 firefighter/medics on the scene.

The house is considered a total loss at an estimated $400,000. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.
The family of 3 adults and 1 teenager will suffer long-term displacement and for now will be staying with other family members in the area.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
