Prince Georges County Firefighters and Paramedics were alerted to a plane down at about 9:30 am Saturday. Fire/EMS units and Fire Chief Marc Bashoor responded to the Freeway Airport, 3900 Church Road, in Bowie.

A small single engine aircraft was found in a cornfield adjacent to the runway. The plane, for whatever reason, went tumbling off the runway during takeoff. The 4 occupants were able to exit the inverted aircraft on their own and were not injured.

Firefighters used foam to remove any potential for a flare-up of the approximately 40 gallons of fuel leaking from the plane.

Firefighters operated for a little over an hour before clearing the scene.

The Maryland State Police will take the lead for the crash investigation.
