Prince George’s County Firefighters battled two unrelated
home fires within an hour of each other this afternoon. Fortunately, no civilian or firefighter
injuries have been reported, however, at least one if not both families are displaced.
At about 1:30 pm firefighters were alerted to a house fire
in the 470 block of Mann Street in Capitol Heights. Firefighters arrived to find fire showing
from the basement of a single family home.
The fire was extinguished within 20 minutes of arrival. Smoke alarms in the house activated when triggered by the smoke. The family escaped without injury,
The cause of the fire is still under investigation. Fire loss is estimated at $25,000. An adult female and her two children, ages 9
and 10, were assisted with temporary assistance and shelter by the County
Citizens Services Unit from the Office of Emergency Management and the American
Red Cross.
The second house fire occurred at around 2:20 pm at a Fort
Washington single family home in the 3400 block of Gennene Lane. Firefighters arrived to find fire coming from
the rear of the 2-story house and the garage.
The fire extended rapidly throughout the structure forcing firefighters
to initially battle the blaze from the exterior. The cause of the fire remains under
investigation and fire loss estimates are not yet available. It appears the family will be displaced,
however, their information is unknown at this time.
A much smaller separate incident occurred at around 1:45 pm
on the 3400 block of Little Hill Lane in District Heights. A small fire was quickly contained and
extinguished in a townhouse. The fire is
under investigation and caused $400 in estimated fire loss.
Because of these incidents occurred within a short time of
each other, firefighters from other jurisdictions were transferred into Prince
George’s County to fill-in at some of our vacant fire/EMS stations. Some of these transferred units operated on
the scene of the house fire on Gennene Lane.
Many thanks to Fairfax, Alexandria, Charles County, Calvert County and
Naval District Washington for their assistance.
