Bomb Technician is one of the most sought after positions in our Department and is perhaps the most difficult to attain. The Prince George’s County Fire/Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Department’s Bomb Squad is one of 480 accredited squads throughout the country. Of that number, approximately 50 are operated by fire departments. The Fire/EMS Department’s Bomb Squad covers events and areas outside the realm of a firefighter’s usual duties. The Prince George's County Fire/Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Department 2016 run statistics have been released. The Department responded to nearly 8,000 more calls than in 2015. Prince George's County Fire/EMS Department Statement on Former Volunteer Arson Convictions

On December 5th, 2022 , Jeremy Hawkins, a former West Lanham Hills v olunteer f irefighter , was sentenced in the Circuit Court for Prince George’s County for Arson in the First Degree and Conspiracy to Commit First Degree Arson. He w as sentenced to 15 years on each count with all but time-served suspended, three years of supervised probation, and ordered to complete 120 hours of community service. Hawkins is the last of the former firefighters to be sentenced. All have been barred from having any involvement with fire suppression activities. A n investigation that began i n December 2019 , and continued through J une 2020, revealed that five West Lanham Hills v olunteer f irefighters : Jeremy Hawkins, Jay St. John, Cole Vazquez, George Smith , and Nicholas Holzberger , conspired with civilians Giancarlo Reyes and Francis Ortiz Oro , to set four vacant houses on fire.
