At around 4:20 pm on Wednesday, November 4, firefighters were alerted to a house fire in the 100 block of Jewett Place in Bowie.  Firefighters arrived at the 2-story, with basement, 3,100 square foot single family home with fire showing from the attached garage.

Initial units were able to contain the fire to the garage area with limited damage to the dwelling itself. A dog was found in the house, removed and given to the owner.  The dog appeared to be uninjured.

A family of four, 3 adults and 1 child, are displaced and were provided assistance from the American Red Cross.  No civilian or firefighter injuries were reported.

Fire Investigators continue to search for the cause of the fire which appears to have started in the garage.  Fire loss is estimated at $75,000.

This home was one of the first built in this sub-division in 1990.  It does not have a residential sprinkler system as other homes in the same community, built in 1992 or after have.  Because the fire appears to have started in the garage it is unknown if sprinklers would have made any difference in suppressing the fire as attics and garages are typically not sprinklered.
