School Bus Fire on 9-12-2016

At around 4:45 pm, Monday, September 12, 2016, firefighters from the Branchville Volunteer Fire Company in College Park, Maryland were alerted to a school bus fire.  This video captured on the dash-cam from the volunteer chief of Branchville documented the action just prior to the arrival of the engine company.

20 children from the Glenarden Woods Elementary School were evacuated from the bus by the driver that was able to remain calm throughout the ordeal.

The fire appears to have originated near one of the rear wheel s and extended throughout the bus.  The official cause is undetermined, however, the cause appears accidental with a mechanical failure within the wheel and brake assembly.

No one was injured.  Most children were picked up by their parents from the scene.

The Fire/EMS Department credits bus driver Reneita Smith with a safe evacuation of the children and preventing injury while risking her own life.  She is slated to receive a commendation award.
