Two Afternoon Incidents Involve Serious Injury and a Fatality

Just after 1:00 PM, Thursday, October 08, 2009, firefighters and paramedics from the Hyattsville and Bladensburg areas responded to a report of a person struck by a train. Fire/EMS units located the scene at Melrose Crossing, Rhode Island Avenue and Crittenden Street, in Hyattsville. A 30-ish year old male was found deceased lying with his bicycle just outside of the in-bound train tracks. CSX officials, Prince George’s County Police and the City of Hyattsville Police Department were on the scene conducting an investigation. The City of Hyattsville Police Department will be taking the lead in the investigation and release of additional information.

Prince George’s County Firefighters and Paramedics responded to Largo Road (Route 202) near White House Road in Largo for a motor vehicle crash with 2 victims trapped in their vehicle. Just before 2:00 PM, Thursday, October 08, 2009, firefighter/medics arrived and went to work to free the 2 trapped occupants out of their vehicle and initiated advanced life support measures. A total of four patients were transported to area hospitals. Two males, each in their early 20’s, were trapped in one vehicle and had to be extricated by firefighters. They were transported in critical condition to a Trauma Center suffering from life-threatening injuries. Two other patients, an adult male and female, from the second vehicle were transported to a local hospital with less serious injuries.

The Fire/EMS Department responded to this incident with twenty personnel on-board 2 paramedic units, 3 ambulances, 1 engine company, 1 heavy duty rescue squad, 1 EMS supervisor and 1 Battalion Chief/Incident Commander.

The Maryland State Police – Forestville are investigating the crash.
