CDP Integrates Training with Recruit Academy

The Prince Georges County (Md.) Fire and Emergency Medical Service Training Academy attended training at FEMA's Center for Domestic Preparedness (CDP) recently. The academy sent 25 firefighter-medic recruits to attend the Emergency Responder Hazardous Materials Technician for CBRNE Incidents (ERHM) course. Earlier this year, 15 recruits from the same class participated in equivalent training.
"The CDP provides the recruits with vital information and a gateway for the title of 'Hazardous Materials Technician'," said Wilson. "This training provides the recruits with an extra level of knowledge that will be put to use to save citizens, fellow firefighters or themselves. Firefighting is inherently dangerous but knowledge is the great equalizer."
The ERHM course provides a hands-on experience in identifying hazardous materials, using advanced survey and monitoring equipment, selecting appropriate levels of personal protection, and performing decontamination procedures, to include evidence preservation. The course introduces response personnel to the terrorist threat, the hazardous materials management system, responder health and safety, the Incident Command System (ICS), site management, information management, response objectives, and terminating the incident.

"I never thought I'd train like this," said Ryan Roberts, firefighter-medic recruit. "Firefighters collecting and preserving evidence is something we don't practice every day. But, I understand why we need to be trained to respond to events differently. This course is going to help all of us. The CDP provided realistic scenarios and scenes. We could literally visualize actual hazardous spills."
"The hands-on [training] has been helpful," said Brittany Frankenfield, firefighter medic recruit. "The training is in-depth and advanced. We've had discussions regarding hazardous materials from other HAZMAT technicians, but after being here, and doing it, now I feel like I am more familiar. CDP training reinforced everything we've been learning."
Among the many courses offered at the CDP for emergency response personnel, ERHM is a five-day class providing responders with a combination of lectures and advanced hands-on practical exercises. ERHM provides the necessary training to prepare response personnel to tackle hazardous incidents.
"Not only is the CDP a great place to train, these soon-to-be firefighter-medics have been introduced to a learning resource they can use after graduation," said Lt. David Wilson Sr., from the Fire and EMS Training Academy. "We have more than 30 recruits from a different course scheduled for training over the next several weeks. We intend to incorporate CDP training into all future courses."
This recruit class graduates in early December and each recruit will be notified soon the location of their first assignment. The CDP is a component of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, a component of the Department of Homeland Security. CDP training focuses on incident management and emergency response to a catastrophic natural disaster or terrorist act. The courses are fully funded for state, local, and tribal response personnel.

PEPCO Continues Donation of Smoke Alarms

Approximately 3000 people die in U.S. home fires each year, and winter is the peak time. Most fatal fires happen in homes with either no alarm or no working alarm. The main reason smoke alarms don’t work is due to dead or missing batteries. Knowing simple steps to fire safety can help save lives.

A new law requires that residents that are currently protected by a 9-volt battery powered smoke alarm must upgrade to a new 10-year tamper proof with hush feature alarm by January 2015.  These alarms will reduce the number of lives lost by ensuring homes typically not protected by a working smoke alarm due to no batteries or dead batteries will now be protected for up to 10 years.

PEPCO has been the major contributor over the past years of smoke alarms to the Fire/EMS Department.  Their generous donation allows us to install smoke alarms, free of charge, to residents.

PEPCO will present new smoke alarms to the Fire/EMS Department to distribute.

Fire Chief Travels to Nashville and CMA's to Represent PGFD Smoke and CO Alarm Initiatives

A leading manufacturer of residential fire safety products is partnering with a country music star on the biggest awards night in Music City to unveil a program intended to make a difference in reducing injuries and death to civilians and firefighters.

Prince George’s County, Maryland, has the largest and busiest combination; career, civilian and volunteer, Fire and Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Departments in the Country.  We have been on the nationwide forefront of keeping everyone safe by being vociferous in the promotion of public awareness campaigns for portable fire extinguishers, smoke alarms and carbon monoxide (CO) detectors in the home. 

We are enthusiastic that a manufacturer of these life-saving devices has partnered with fire departments across the Nation including Prince George's County in the quest to save lives, reduce injuries and prevent property loss.  Recognizing our Fire/EMS Department's collective effort, Kidde Fire Safety, a leading manufacturer of residential fire safety products, has invited Marc S. Bashoor, Prince George’s County Fire Chief, to represent the men and women of our Department in joining other members of the fire service in Nashville to help promote Kidde's “Be a Safety Hero” initiative.  Fire Chief Bashoor will be a guest of Kidde at the Country Music Awards after daylong activities promoting the “Be a Safety Hero” program.

On Wednesday, November 6, representatives from Kidde, and the fire service will participate at a press conference to unveil the “Be a Safety Hero” program with Craig Morgan, a former first responder and one of country music’s best-loved artists.  The ‘Be a Safety Hero’ initiative empowers everyone to follow 5 simple steps to fire safety and is a new national awareness campaign in partnership with Kidde Fire Safety. 

The first step to ‘Be a Safety Hero’ is to replace outdated smoke alarms. To help, Kidde will donate 1,000 of its new Worry-Free smoke alarms to fire departments at 10 stops during Morgan’s 2014 tour ($25,000 retail value). These 10-year sealed-in battery smoke alarms will be installed in local at-risk homes.

Kidde, Brooks and Morgan also will recognize the proactive and industry-leading fire prevention actions of the State of Tennessee. According to the state of Tennessee, 39 lives have been saved since January 2013 thanks to 10-year sealed-in battery smoke alarms installed by the state’s Division of Fire Prevention. Kidde will donate 500 of its Worry-Free smoke alarms to help Tennessee continue its life-saving efforts.
