Bowie Man Charged with Arson

Prince George's County Fire Investigators have charged a Bowie resident with Arson in the 1st Degree, as well as other charges, after he is alleged to have set multiple fires inside of his house.

At around 8:30 pm, Friday, July 5, 2013, firefighters and paramedics were alerted to a house fire in the 16300 block of Pewter Lane in Bowie. While Fire/EMS units were en route dispatchers at Public Safety Communications advised that police officers were on the scene and this involved a possible domestic dispute and someone may still be inside the burning home.

Once the scene was confirmed secure by law enforcement, firefighters arrived at a 2-story house to find the top floor had smoke showing from the front and fire showing from the rear. A rapid search and rescue commenced with no one being found inside. Firefighters advanced hose lines to the top floor and extinguished multiple fires with different points of origin. There were no injuries as a result of the fire and loss is estimated at $10,000.

It is believed that a male occupant of the house used an ignitable liquid to set the fires. As a result of witnesses accounts an adult male resident was taken into custody on the scene.

Elijah Kareem Shahid, 40 years-of-age, and resident of the house of origin has been charged with Arson-1st Degree, Malicious Burning-1st Degree and Threat of Arson.

Arson in the 1st Degree is a Felony and a person who violates this section is guilty of the felony of arson in the first degree and on conviction is subject to imprisonment not exceeding 30 years or a fine not exceeding $50,000 or both.

Malicious Burning in the 1st Degree is a Felony with up to 5 years in prison or a $5,000 fine or both. Threat of Arson is a Misdemeanor and carries a penalty of up to 10 years or a fine of $10,000 or both.

Shadid is currently being detained at the Department of Correction in Upper Marlboro on a $15,000 Bond.
